USED PICKS OF THE WEEK

LP - Melvins - Ozma

Dave - Permanent Records Chicago

$74.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"With Black in on bass and the band relocated to San Francisco, the Melvins started, in a subtle way, exploring and developing their already-trademark sound further. The genre-dipping and out-of-nowhere efforts of later years were still some distance off, to be sure, but moments like the vocal/drum-only part on "Oven" and the needle-thin feedback treatment punctuating "Revulsion/We Reach" (along with occasional chimes) show more chances already being taken. Osbourne's tribute to Ozzy reaches new heights throughout -- opening track "Vile" in particular blends that and the running Gene Simmons fascination into a twisted monster, insistent, unnerving, and threatening all at once. "Green Honey" is another great, one of the quicker songs (at least comparatively speaking) going off as a slightly echo-shrouded Osbourne fires off a few quick rambles. Crover once again is the band's not secret weapon, as the clattering start of "Agonizer" and the subtle but spot-on tempo shifts on "Claude" make clear. Black's bass playing is steady-as-it-goes enough not to get in the way of anything, and she and Crover make enough bedrock thump for Osbourne to let loose with both his pipes and his guitar. Whether it's the creepily calm start of "Let God Be Your Gardener," plucking rather than bulldozing forward for once, or the grinding do-not-pass-go attack of "Raise a Paw," Ozma is out for blood and gets it. Killer song titles this time out include "Ever Since My Accident" and "Cranky Messiah." The random what-the-hell moment is right at the end, though -- "Candy-O," a cover of the Cars song that shouldn't work but actually does the business. Also fun -- consider the lead-guitar melody of "Love Thing" and how it oddly resembles Pearl Jam's breakthrough hit "Alive" from a few years later." - allmusic.com

LP - Bad Brains - S/t

Jamie - Permanent Records Chicago

$14.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"For fans of hardcore, many would agree that the holy grail of the genre is Bad Brains' self-titled album, originally released back in 1982 as a cassette-only release on ROIR. The ensuing years after its initial release haven't dulled the album's fury and rage in the least, and it's still impressive how the band can switch gears from red-hot hardcore to cool reggae dubs in the blink of an eye. All the classics are here: "Sailin' On," "Banned in D.C.," "Pay to Cum," "Right Brigade," as well as one of their strongest reggae tunes, "I Luv I Jah." The back of the album boasts a quote from the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch, which sums up the proceedings simply, "the best punk/hardcore album of all time."" - allmusic.com

LP - Tangerine Dream - Encore
R.I.P. Edgar Froese

Jon - Permanent Records Chicago

$19.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"Encore -- Tangerine Dream Live, 1977 is one of the better concert albums from Tangerine Dream. As with most of their live releases, this disc features all new material. Each of the long-form (over 16 minutes) pieces has its own set of movements. In effect, it is like listening to four electronic symphonies. This is also one of the strongest TD lineups. The set features Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke and Peter Baumann on synthesizers, effects and other electronic devices. (It is Baumann's last recording with the band.) The music ranges from dirge-like drones to piano solos to crashing experimental textures. There are echoes of progressive and avant-garde rock. The set is uniquely Tangerine Dream, however, with similarities to Genesis, Pink Floyd and other art rock practitioners of that era." - Allmusic.com

7in - Buck - Live While You Live b/w Long Hot Highway

Original 1975 Stock

$19.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

We found a small stack of this rare ripping Private Press single from rural Illinois hard rock act Buck.  It's got two cuts of radio ready fist pumpers with some serious shredding guitar throughout!  It's on Silk Banana Records out of Rantoul, IL.  Each single is slightly different as the band requested that the pressing plant press the single off-center making the sound a little warble-y.  Some are better than others, but it's luck of the draw!
Sleeves (VG) show some shelf wear from storage.

LP - Obnox - Boogalou Reed - White Vinyl

EDITION OF 300

$12.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Riddle me this: who on Earth makes 15 top notch records in 5 years and stays as obscure as Obnox monarch Bim Thomas? Not that there's been no love at all—now that the man seemingly spent as much of 2014 on tour as off, and dropped blazetastic videos for "Red I" and "Molecule/How to Rob," the spotlight is widening, and not just from the usual indie/undie blogs—the Washington-by-god-POST has seen fit to recognize the 'Nox's bulletproof alloy of Cleveland-by-god-Ohio's two sturdiest musical ores: punk rock and soul.

And maybe that right there's why fame, Grammys and fat cash haven't come a-knockin'—'Noxmusik is some potent, real, RAW shit, and the new drop, Boogalou Reed, isn't going to win over any Future Islands fans to the cause. And that is what it is, but Thomas' songwriting chops keep getting better and better. Boogalou Reed is home to soul satisfying gospel-psych like "I Climbed a Mountain," skillet-to-the-face noise freakouts like "Proto-Pipe," taut rockers like "Raven Slaughter Culture" and "All Hail the Deejay." 'Nox's tunes just keep turning out SO DAMN GOOD, and if more people can't hear that through the fuzzgrind, that's really just too bad for them. But there's no way rock 'n' roll this persuasive stays a secret forever. - Ron Kretsch

LP - Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand

2015 Reissue

$17.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Little introduction should be required here. Let it suffice to say that Bee Thousand is arguably the best, or at least among the top Guided By Voices albums in a copious discography. Accordingly, the album has stacked up accolades over the years, including being voted #1 on Amazon.com’s “100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time.” It’s a staple of such lists, and has also placed highly on those curated by Spin, Pitchfork, Mojo and Rolling Stone.

This new LP pressing, the first since the late ’90s, honors the album’s 20th anniversary. It features new (and definitely improved) mastering from John Golden, a substantial gatefold jacket with a previously unpublished Robert Pollard collage, and high-quality virgin vinyl from RTI. We’ve also included a free download card." - Scat

LP - Guided By Voices - King Shit And The Golden Boys

$15.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"As a companion piece to the vinyl reissue of Bee Thousand, Scat Records presents a new edition of this finest compilation of Guided By Voices outtakes. Originally included with the multi-disc set Box, this issue marks the album’s first release as a standalone piece. The first side features highlights from two otherwise unreleased albums from the band’s early days (Learning to Hunt and Back to Saturn X), while the second side mops up the best cuts left off of Bee Thousand. All tracks are exclusive to this release.

Packaged in a high-quality, heavy-duty tip-on jacket and pressed on virgin RTI vinyl, this LP is a must for even the casual GBV fan." - Scat

LP - ONO - Ennui - 2015 Reissue

Edition of 100 on Colored Vinyl

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"After a grueling year-long tape transfer endeavor from the original reels, we’re proud to announce the long awaited and obscure second full length by Ono, ‘Ennui’, is finally readily available for mass consumption. Originally released by Thermidor in 1986, the legendary experimental group from Chicago’s southside expands upon their incredible ‘Machines That Kill People’ album three years prior while simultaneously experimenting with atmospherics and becoming further sparse in their compositions. Travis belts out his gospel-tinged Beefhart-ian sermons over a post-Gristle clatter, fitting nicely on the shelf between Monte and Minimal Man (who really shelves by first names, though?), taking traditional hymns and filtering them through afterwar POVs, remnants of post-modern abstract punk and Western world queer counterculture. The theatrical attributes of the band shine heavily on ‘Ennui’, giving noticeable nods to Pere Ubu (the camp whom Travis cut his teeth with living in Cleveland during the seventies); however, scrambling the influences beyond recognition, leaving a trail for the listener to digest and conjure (think) they know where they’re coming from. This was the last grooved document they released until reemerging as hidden gems of Chicago’s avant-garde art scene in the late aughts (many thanks to Plastic Crimewave’s investigation skills), reigniting the performance flame of the band members and exposing (corrupting/warping/inspiring) generations of fresh faces in the spaces and basements of the Chicagoland music sewers (not to mention playing at the city’s best art museums and constantly being heralded in the press as Chicago’s best kept historical secret). Ono continues to currently release albums on Moniker; their current heavily-stringed (yet ever shapeshifting) incarnation an Eddie Hazel-meets-modular-synthesis soup encrusted and fried with noise and theatrics, constantly outshining the young and the restless they share the stage/dirt floor with. Then and now, one of (if not) the best Chicago’s weird punk/art world. This reissue is a collaborative effort by Galactic Archive and Priority Male, with arts preservation grant assistance through non-profit SOTA. 150 gram vinyl, 100 on color, 400 on black." - Galactic Archive/Priority male

LP - Bolder Damn - Mourning - Reissue

$25.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Bolder Damn's 1971 album Mourning is an absolute monster among U.S. hard rock private pressings. Hailing from Florida, Bolder Damn boasted an ultra-heavy, "raw-in-your-face" sound with devastating fuzzed-out guitar, a solid rhythm section, and manic vocals. First discovered and reissued by the legendary Rockadelic label in 1990, the album has gained a cult status among new fans of '70s proto-doom and hard rock sounds since then. Bringing it back into print after many years, Guerssen presents the definitive vinyl reissue of Mourning, featuring original artwork and fold-out insert with liner notes, interview with singer John Anderson, and rare pictures. Remastered sound. Highly recommended if you like Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Pentagram, MC5, Sainte Anthony's Fyre..." - Guerssen

LP - Exhaustion - With Kris Wanders - Import

$19.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"This one sided LP documents the first collaboration between Melbourne psych rock thugs Exhaustion and the Dutch-born tenor saxophonist Kris Wanders, a veteran of the early days of European free improvisation who performed widely with legendary figures like Peter Brötzmann, Peter Kowald, and Han Bennink and recorded some classic sides with Alexander von Schlippenbach, Fred van Hove and the obscure Dutch pianist/clarinetist Kees Hazevoet before moving to Australia in the late 1970s, where he has continued to perfect his brand of raw, soulful free jazz.

Considering the roof-raising intensity usually achieved by both Exhaustion and Wanders’s regular Unit, it might be surprising for some that this recording is less of a post-Last Exit blowout than a spacious exploration of group dynamics. But this is certainly no casual jam session: Wanders and Exhaustion manage to imbue both peaks of manic ferocity and descents into near silence with the same feeling of concentration and intensity.

Wanders often grounds his playing here in mournful blues phrasing recalling both Brötzmann and Frank Wright, releasing slow arcs of notes that build into guttural cries and rapid-fire fragments of post-Coltrane scalar exploration. Duncan Blachford’s FX-saturated guitar playing moves between shimmering feedback and explosive reverb-tank interruptions, and the way his lingering pause over each note, allowing it ring out into feedback, combines with the cymbal-heavy pointillism of Per Byström’s drumming is reminiscent of the atmosphere of suppressed violence in Masayuki Takayanagi’s classic mid-70’s New Direction Unit recordings. At other moments Byström builds up thudding, irregular pulses that, accompanied by Ian Wadley’s wandering bass lines, bring the quartet into classic free jazz territory.

Blachford’s vocal interjection, ranging from ghostly humming to rowdy grunts, push the group into a truly unhinged meeting point of intuitive psych-rock excesses and speed-of-thought free improv interplay. The group sound, rather than the contribution of any individual player, is the focus here: even Wanders, whose enormous tone and constant invention can’t help but occupy the listener’s attention, often recedes back into the group’s primordial soup, building up delicate and sometimes piercing microtonal harmonies with Blachford’s feedback tones.

Captured in fittingly raw room fidelity, this is the first document of a powerful new group, and a perfect contemporary companion to the recently unearthed Brötzmann/Fushitsusha recordings.

LP - Gun Club - Mother Juno - Reissue

$21.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"At last, a vinyl reissue of this 1987 classic album by The Gun Club, featuring Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Kid Congo Powers (The Cramps, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds). Mother Juno meant the evolution of sound at The Gun Club's discography, entering into musical adventures where Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Kid Congo Powers mixed their guitars and melodies as per Television and Jimi Hendrix. This record has the addition of guitar cooperation from Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds) and was recorded in Berlin during the wild period before the fall of the Wall. Intense, obscure, rich in sound and writing, Mother Juno is a timeless classic for all fans of rock music. Proudly released by Bang! Records, courtesy of Creeping Ritual Productions, this record has been remastered and is presented in a deluxe gatefold edition, including two bonus tracks ("Crab Dance" and "Nobody's City" which has been recently covered by Iggy Pop and Nick Cave, alongside Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Beasts Of Bourbon's Brian Henry Hooper) previously unreleased on the original edition." - Bang! LP - Liaisons Dangereuses - Liaisons Dangereuses - Reissue

"Soulsheriff Records presents a milestone in electronic music, Liaisons Dangereuses' legendary 1981 self-titled debut album, newly remastered and reissued for the first time since 2002. Liaisons Dangereuses still fascinates today, through its innovative sound and the mystery encompassing it. The 10 electrifying songs, produced by Chrislo Haas (DAF) and Beate Bartel (Mania D, Matador) and reinforced by Krishna Goineau's French and Spanish speech-attack lyrics, created a unique style. The album, anything other than a typical Berlin or Düsseldorf thing, became an international favorite. Songs like "Peut Être... Pas" and "Los Niños del Parque" played a decisive role in the development of house in Detroit and Chicago, as well as various forms of European techno. LP includes download code." - Soulsheriff Records

"Legendary German punk pioneers, founded by charismatic singer Peter Hein (later: Fehlfarben) in 1978. Subversive, aggressive and with bitter humor, sharp statements to the situation of society and politics in Germany of the late '70s. The music is slower, more dub-influenced than the typical uptempo punk rock of those times. Peter Hein (vocals); Franz Bielmeier (guitar); Thomas Schwebel (guitar); Markus Oehlen (drums). The album was originally released on Pure Freude as a double 7". Remastering 2014, first and final pressing of 1,000." - Cien Fuegos

LP - Philip Glass - How Now / Strung Out

$25.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"This new vinyl release from Orange Mountain Music presents Philip Glass' first concert ever in what the composer considers his 'debut.' The concert took place on May 19, 1968 at the Film Makers Cinematheque at 80 Wooster Street in Soho, New York City. The performance was the first 'all-Glass' concert ever and featured solo works and duets with visual elements. This recording captures two of the solo works on the program including Glass himself performing 'How Now' for solo organ and 'Strung Out' for solo amplified violin performed by the legendary Dorothy Pixley-Rothchild for whom Glass had previously written a violin concerto for in 1960. It was soon after this concert that Glass started his own ensemble for which he wrote many new works. Consequently many of the works from this 'pre-Philip Glass Ensemble' period were not performed for a long time. 'Strung Out' has the sheet music strung out in an L shape and the performer walks along the music as he/she goes farther into the piece. This is the oldest recording of any kind of Philip Glass' early music." - Orange Mountain

LP+12in - Sleater Kinney - No Cities To Love (Deluxe Edition, Download Included)

 WHITE VINYL W/ BONUS 12in W/ B-SIDE ETCHING + POSTER

$26.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

""We sound possessed on these songs," says guitarist/vocalist Carrie Brownstein about Sleater-Kinney's eighth studio album, No Cities to Love. "Willing it all – the entire weight of the band and what it means to us – back into existence."

The new record is the first in 10 years from the acclaimed trio – Brownstein, vocalist/guitarist Corin Tucker, and drummer Janet Weiss – who came crashing out of the '90s Pacific Northwest riot grrrl scene, setting a new bar for punk's political insight and emotional impact. Formed in Olympia, WA in 1994, Sleater-Kinney were hailed as "America's best rock band" by Greil Marcus in Time Magazine, and put out seven searing albums in 10 years before going on indefinite hiatus in 2006.

But the new album isn't about reminiscing, it's about reinvention, the ignition of an unparalleled chemistry to create new sounds and tell new stories. "I always considered Corin and Carrie to be musical soulmates," says Weiss, whose drums fuel the fire of Tucker and Brownstein's vocal and guitar interplay. "Something about taking a break brought them closer, desperate to reach together again for their true expression." The result is a record that grapples with love, power and redemption without restraint.

Produced by longtime Sleater-Kinney collaborator John Goodmanson, who helmed many of the band's earlier albums including 1997 breakout set Dig Me Out, No Cities to Love is indeed formidable from the first beat. Sleater-Kinney's decade apart made room for family and other fruitful collaborations, as well as an understanding of what the band's singular chemistry demands. "Sleater-Kinney isn't something you can do half-assed or half-heartedly,” says Brownstein. “This band requires a certain desperation, a direness. We have to be willing to push because the entity that is this band will push right back."

"The core of this record is our relationship to each other, to the music, and how all of us still felt strongly enough to about those to sweat it out in the basement and to try and reinvent our band," adds Tucker. With No Cities to Love, "we went for the jugular."" - Sub Pop

"Originally released in 1965. "'Marking a transition in its development between the advanced swing of the early Chicago-era recordings and the increased free-form experimentation of its New York tenure, this album also reveals the first recorded versions of two Ra standards, 'Friendly Galaxy' and 'Love in Outer Space.' Accessible, yet segueing into vanguard territory, this album highlights a fertile period in the Arkestra's history. Looser and more aggressive than its Chicago recordings, these pieces find the Arkestra pushing at the limits of harmony and tonality." -- Troy Collins. "The album is characterised by playful experimentation. 'Solar Symbols' - a duo for percussion -- used reverberation techniques that have since been considered an early foray into pure ambient music. 'Solar Differentials' even featured an experimental 'Space Voice'."

"Gatefold LP version. The conception that became The Third Sound was first formed when former Singapore Sling and Hudson Wayne member Hakon Aoalsteinsson left his home of Iceland and music collective Vebeth to the contrasting rooftops of Rome. Drawing from his roots of shoegaze neo-psychedelia, he made sleight-of-hand gestures towards country, blues and Kraut and recorded his first album with '60s aficionado Francesco D'Onofrio. Returning home, he finished the album with guitar prodigy Hallberg Daoi Hallergsson (Jakobinarina), and began experimenting with new mixing techniques, being inspired by a theory known as the Third Sound." - A Recordings

LP - Tom Dissevelt - Fantasy In Orbit - Round The World With Electronic Music

$21.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"RSD Black Friday release. Even before the landing of men onto the moon or any space travels, majestic Tom Dissevelt captured the essence of the space mood and science fiction aesthetic. Fantasy in Orbit draws the blueprint for a future sound, later recognized as "Electronic Music," as simple as that. The music is this jaunty space-age swirl, with synthetic oscillations and bubbling textures, creating what is one moment playful, the next menacing, as they struggle to reign in the beast that would become electronic music. You can hear everything from bachelor pad exotica to avant-garde electronics, and even a primitive precursor to acid house. It's all here. As a side note it's music that could've been the soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey, as Stanley Kubrick requested the music for a new space project he was working on. Dissevelt had never heard of him so he ignored the letter. The vibe is tremendous and vital. Proto-so-many-things. It's a relic of electronic music. Get it now." - Sonitron Records

Since it was established in 1914 the Phillips Research laboratories (NatLab) in Holland has given us the very first artificial reverb, tape recording, stereo, the cassette tape, CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and the songs of Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan. You see, back in the Cold War, with the arms race and the frequent threat of annihilation via an atom bomb, technology had developed something of an image problem. Consequently, Phillips brought in some composers, in the hope that their technological music could put a human face on the new toys. The result was like "Song of the Second Moon" -- the first piece of electronic pop music, recorded in about 1957. It was produced over a couple of days by Dick Raaijmakers (aka Kid Baltan), pressed as a single and given away to visitors to the lab. Despite the tune's lofty status in the pantheon of electronic music, Raaijmakers was inexplicably demoted to assistant to fellow composer Tom Dissevelt. However, the duo proceeded to record 20 or so tracks over the next three years in what was a quite laborious process. The Philips label, however, released several tracks by the duo spread over a couple of sometimes-futuristic library music compilations like The Fascinating World of Electronic Music. Get this piece of future music now." - Sonitron Records

"Do It To Ya was the lone record from this Houston band who pressed up this self-released single to give out at their shows. The A side finds the band honing their bar room skills from Hard Boogie to near Proto Punk. It’s a hooky energetic performance .that doesn’t pretend to be what it’s not, although the no-nonsense straight ahead riffing and 42nd Street mentions makes you think that they might have had The New York Dolls in their sights. The B side owes more to obvious 1975 Southern Rock influences.

Bassist Jack Beasley was kind enough to give some background on the band and recording the single

Jeremiah was formed in 1972. Jack Beasley was the original bass player with Mike Rayburn on drums. There were two other guys on guitars, but as it turned they weren’t that serious about playing rock music. As those guys moved on to do other things, they were replaced by Jimmy Deen in 1973 and Tommy Mansell was added to the line-up in 1974. The early gigs were high school dances and proms. But they eventually started playing night clubs and private parties.

“In 1975, the band paid for some time at ACA recording studios in Houston. We recorded six original songs. I don't know who mastered the two tracks on the 45 or where the 45 was manufactured. The label name, "Artesia", was just something we made up. I think we had 600 45s made, maybe less, but no more than that...”

Although the ambition was there to break beyond the local scene and go professional, it didn’t pan out for the boys

“Our goal was to become rock stars. In the fall of 1975 we quit our day jobs and went on the road. We played mostly in Texas. We became friends with members of the band Point Blank, who were managed by the same guy that managed ZZ Top. This was in 1976 and we thought we were close to a record deal, but it didn’t happen. We played at the bigger clubs in Houston , Dallas and Fort Worth , among others. We played four to five nights a week, every week, just about. We did all we knew to do to get a record label to sign us, except leave Texas. That might have been the problem…”

What was the difference the 60s Texas Garage/Psychedelic bands and what was happening in the mid 70s?

“I believe that 60s bands, even in Texas were heavily into the psychedelic experience. They were trying to find new sounds, and a lot of experimenting was going on then, with their instruments, and also their minds (drugs). 70s bands just wanted to rock. To heck with experimenting. Find that groove. Turn up the volume. And create a sound that compelled your audience to move with the beat and play their air guitars. Although the guys in Jeremiah were somewhat influenced by the 60s music, I believe the stronger influences came from what was going on around us at the time. We covered many of the most popular rock bands of the early and mid 70s. We liked the melodic stuff, but it still needed to have that hard edge. You can hear that fusion in the original Jeremiah songs. Often in those songs, you have some very soft, melodic vocals or guitar segments, slammed up against a dynamic, hard-driving mix of guitar, bass and drums. We just couldn’t stay quiet for very long...”" - purepop1uk.blogspot.com

7in - Spray Paint - Cussin'

$11.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"SPRAY PAINT are a no wave punk outfit from Austin, Texas made up of CHRIS STEPHENSON (drums/vocals), CORY PLUMP (guitar/vocals) and GEORGE DISHNER (guitar/vocals). Spray Paint's buzz-sawing guitars run headlong through labyrinthine tunnels of reverb, chased down by some wildly brain-bashing drums. All three members of Spray Paint sing, too. "Cussin'" plays out with some derailed guitars, working up a tone of paranoia amid the thumping rhythms. "Three Thumbs Up" is a disorientating number with the band's trio of vocals calling out the lyrics like a repetitive mantra. "Ask My Old Roomate, Man" makes room for path-leaping sprees of guitar, offset with stormy blasts of distortion." - Upset The Rhythm

7in - Strange Wilds - Standing + 2 (Download Included)

$4.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"First, the basics: Strange Wilds formed in Olympia, WA in 2012. The band grew out of the fertile Pacific-Northwest punk scene, with members from Negative Press, Outlook, Wreck, and a bunch of other punk/hardcore bands of the last few years. Sometime in 2014, the band settled into the classic, economical, power-trio configuration of bass, drums, and a single guitar, and recorded “Standing,” their second release (their first being the four-song Wet 7” on Inimical Records).

Now, about this record: “Standing” is a taut, churning slice of Northwest punk fit for the ages. Its B-sides, “Gator Cough” and “Never Warm”, are, respectively, a fist-banging slammer and a slow-burn rumination on low feelings. Strange Wilds’ music is soaked in the deadpan gloom endemic to their home region. And yet it is not music to wallow to. Tense, quick and tight, Strange Wilds make anthems for the anxious. Shards of Bleach-era Nirvana, splinters of Jesus Lizard, even a little Born Against.

This single was recorded at High Command Studios in Olympia, WA by Captain Tripps Ballsington (Nudity, Sex Vid, The Tight Bros From Way Back When) in 2014." - Sub Pop

"Escape From Brisbane is a concept album featuring instrumental compositions by Matt Kennedy (Kitchen's Floor, Eternal Soundcheck) and a variety of guest vocalists from the Brisbane music community.

Taking inspiration from low budget 80's sci-fi soundtracks, the album is intended as a warped time capsule to preserve the personality of independent Brisbane music circa 2014/2015. Recorded over a period of 6 months, Escape From Brisbane features vocal contributions from 14 of the cities most interesting and unique musicians. Gerald Keaney (Gerald Keaney & The Gerald Keaneys), Bek Moore (Clag, Scrabbled), Mark Spinks (Gravel Samwidge), Bobby Bot (Wonderfuls), Leighton Craig (Primitive Motion), Lizley (Bitchratch), Sean & Chris Campion (Multiple Man), Dan & Sarah Spencer (Blank Realm), Andrew McLellan (Cured Pink), Sandra Selig (Primitive Motion), Conwae Burrell (Extrafoxx), and Nicola Morton (Club Sound Witches, Equalizer 2K). The cover artwork was painted by Dusty Anastassiou (Dag, Scrabbled).

Escape From Brisbane is a unique experiment and a strange trip into the psyche of Brisbane's modern day fringe dwellers." - Virtual Cool

Book - John Fahey - Paintings

$36.99 → BUY NOW

"The much-revered avant-garde guitarist John Fahey (1939-2001) incorporated influences ranging from folk, blues, and bluegrass to classical music, musique concrete, and noise in his primarily acoustic guitar-based compositions. Considered a legend by many, Fahey released upward of three dozen LPs in his lifetime. Relatively late in life, Fahey extended his so-called 'American Primitive' approach beyond music, and into the creation of a substantial body of paintings. Painting on found poster board and discarded spiral notebook paper, working with tempera, acrylic, spray paint, and magic marker, Fahey's intuitive approach echoes the action painters and abstract expressionists. His painting studio floated from motel bed to motel bed and eventually ended up in his home in Salem, Oregon. The same alluring and tranquilizing aesthetics that defines much of Fahey's musical output are equally present in his paintings. Thoroughly illustrated with 70 color plates, the volume includes an essay by Keith Connolly, founding member of No Neck Blues Band." 128 pages; 8.265 x 11.5", hardcover." - Inventory Press
