LP - Thee Oh Sees - Floating Coffin - $13.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
CD - Thee Oh Sees - Floating Coffin - $12.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Well lookie what we have here - a BRAND NEW Oh Sees album - just in time for summer! "Floating Coffin" is the band's fifteenth proper studio album (if you count the four records under the OCS moniker) since 2003, this time on Dwyer's own Castle Face imprint!

Fans of the band will find much to love about "Floating Coffin" - Dwyer and Co.'s patented manic Krautrock'cum'psych'cum'garage goulash is in full effect. However, the band seems to recognize the futility of trying to top a masterpiece like 'Putrifiers II", and instead sidesteps it by creating an album just as good, but with a suite of tunes that crackle with a touch more finesse. Whereas "Putrifiers II" was a caveman club to the back of yer 'ead, "Floating Coffin" glides past and effortlessly shivs you with the business end of a sharpened toothbrush. You don't even notice you're bleeding until it's too late.  Tunes like "I Come From The Mountain" and "Sweet Helicopter" sit close to their wheelhouse but bite with sharper teeth, while songs like 'Maze Fancier' and 'Strawberries One and Two' bubble and scrape with the skeletal groove of Can or Neu! Then you get a weird as fuck song like "Night Crawler" with it's sinister synth that beds the tune in a blanket of crispy fried electronics, while the band dirges forth o'er top like Tubeway Army disguised as a doom band.

It's safe to say we're all big Oh Sees fans over here, so this one was hotly anticipated and it does not disappoint. Plus BIG UPS for the creepiest artwork so far from a band that has it's fair share of creepy fucking album covers. Pull up a chair, take a toke or three and blast this one until you're suitably embalmed and lying in yer own "Floating Coffin". REC-O-FUCKING-MENDED.

LP - Kurt Vile - Wakin On A Pretty Daze (Numbered Blue Vinyl Deluxe Edition) - $23.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
CD - Kurt Vile - Wakin On A Pretty Daze - $9.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Philly's Kurt Vile returns with the much anticipated "Wakin' On A Pretty Daze" on the always solid Matador Records!

Man o' man, the production work on this record is phenomenal!  Kurt Vile's bedroom slacker tales have been given a supreme work over and his story-filled tunes shine that much brighter.  "Wakin' On A Pretty Daze" finds Kurt laying out zen one-liners for the modern day urbanite looking to lay back from the crowd and drift in the clouds.  We’ve long been Kurt Vile fans here at Permanent and the dude just keeps upping the ante with each new release.  "Wakin' On A Pretty Daze" is yet another of those releases that is just brimming with outstanding tunes that'll put a gobbery smile on your yap for days to come.

Drop the needle and ease on back hombre cuz "Wakin' On A Pretty Daze" will be supplying you with gainful waves of feel good vibes with each repeated listen.  We're sure this 'un will be making all sorts of folks year end lists… you just watch or better yet… listen. That's a pretty sweet Richie Records t-shirt Kurt is reppin' on the back cover!   Definitely Recommended.

LP - Black Bug - Reflecting The Light (on Hozac) - $11.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
CD - Black Bug - Reflecting The Light (on Hozac) - $8.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Black Bug has been supplying the world with top notch lo-fi synth punk debauchery for some time now and their latest, "Reflecting The Light" is yet another installment of bubbling, bleating low end synthesizer snarls and Scandinavian slurs of sci-fi uneasiness.  They splatter out drum machine driven robo-punk numbers of circuit bent mayhem that are as dangerous as they are catchy.  Black Bug burrow under your skin and infect their future primitive sonics directly to your brain, steadily building a hypnotized army of followers to do their bidding so crank this beast to the limit and blank out to soundtrack of the forth coming dystopian wasteland.  Hugely Recommended.

LP - Georgiana Starlington - Paper Moon - $11.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
CD - Georgiana Starlington - Paper Moon - $8.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

It's always a good day when Hozac swings by the shop and drops off their latest batch of goodies, and this week was extra exciting cuz that included the debut album from Georgianna Starlington, the hazy countrified rock side project from Julie and Jack of the K-Holes.

Sort of surprising to see a softer side of Julie and Jack Hines, as well as a more mellow side of Hozac, but all that notwithstanding, this Georgianna Starlington is a perfect combination of introspective, atmospheric indie meeting the best of twangy Americana.  We hear touches of the Handsome Family, Cowboy Junkies, Slowdive and Nancy Sintra and Lee Hazlewood in Jack and Julies' woozy country soaked duets; as well as a bit of Gram Parsons and his Laurel Canyon cohorts shining through their world weary dream pop.  "Paper Moon" is a perfect Sunday morning record when you're trying to piece together all that happened the night before.  Georgianna Starlington seamlessly merges hints of psychedelia, shoegaze and country into one engrossing repeat listen.

We're not sure which side of Julie and Jack Hines we like better, the gnarly noise of the K-Holes or this laidback sunburnt pop of Georgianna Starlington.  Luckily we don't have to choose.   HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

LP - JJUU JJUU - FRST EP (with download) - $12.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Heavy and heady spiritual psych-rock from these wandering newcomers, JJUU JJUU! This vinyl debut comes courtesy of Brooklyn label Beyond Beyond Is Beyond (who are on a serious roll what with this album, The MMOSS/Quilt split, the Prince Rupert's Drops LP and the amazing Kiki Pau LP coming out in the span of a year) !!!

'FRST EP' is definitely a mouthwatering 'amuse bouche' for this tasty morsel of heavy psych! Rolling drums and droning guitars ebb and sway, conjuring a peyote-fueled rollercoaster ride thru the blistering Mojave. The here's definitely a mood and vibe ruminating thru these grooves, with echoes of fellow voyagers like Spacemen 3, Brian Jonestown Massacre and even some of the headier moments from the earlier Black Angels oeuvre.  These guys are definitely ones to watch - we certainly will be. RECOMMENDED.

10in - MMOSS & Quilt - New Hampshire Freaks (with download) - $12.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Two of the Boston-area's best bands get together and get weird all over each other! We love MMOSS's latest record "Only Children" on Trouble In Mind and Quilt's debut from 2011 was a sleeper hit here at the shop - both bands have a unique take on modern-day psychedelia that really packs our pipe (so to speak)! And or course we have up and comer Brooklyn psych label Beyond Beyond Is Beyond to thank for this 10-inch of hazy glory.

MMOSS starts things off on the A-Side with their track "Nothing Left" - an acoustic-laden tune awash in the band's bewitching harmonies. It might be their best tune yet - stirring melancholic pop of the highest order that hints at Buffalo Springfield or Mamas and the Papas in one moment, and Ride at another. Quilt unfold "Open Eyes" with Anna Rochinski and Shane Butler's intertwining, intricately fingerpick'd guitars dancing around this folk-inflected psych tune. We're hearing a bit of Fairport Convention or Pentangle in those harmonies and Rochinski and Butler definitely know their way around a fretboard (Richard Thompson would be proud). The real treat here is "Sandy" the sidelong track that worms its way thru the B-side; it's a hazy and mellow tune that evokes the mellow drive of "Future Days"-era Can and combs it thru the abstract weight of Amon Duul II's "Tanz der Lemminge" before washing it in the cool waters of "Cluster '71". Heavy names to drop - believe us we know, but the bands more than pull it off. These two units are tight buds, having both come up on the same scene they built for themselves on the East coast and having played and toured together incessantly, and that sense of familiarity and oneness is what makes a track like "Sandy" really, truly succeed.

This is a KILLER release and definitely should be destined for some PRex-er's end-of -the-year lists. RECOMMENDED.

LP - A Giant Dog - Bone - $13.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Austin, Texas' A Giant Dog return with their second platter full of rock bangers, "Bone" once again brought to you by the fine folks at Tic Tac Totally.  If you haven't heard of A Giant Dog yet, now is the time to get acquainted with their bouncy power rock!!!

The tangle of killer Austin bands is almost too much to keep straight, but A Giant Dog is one band you don't wanna overlook.  Sharing members with OBN IIIs and Bad Sports and blazing the same punky garage rock trail, A Giant Dog are definitely upping the ante and ambition with their new lp "Bone."  The melodic hooks of their peers Sweet Talk and Mind Spiders are here in spades as well as some rowdy nods to 80s college rock, classic soul and 60s garage bands, though all done up like a female fronted version of Replacements doing Thin Lizzy covers.  Yes, infectious and full of punk energy, "Bone" is far from a boring listen.

A fun highly suggested spin all around, but especially for those into the River City Tanlines, the Gits, White Mystery and the Reigning Sound.  What can we say, but mark another win down for the Texas rock scene.  "Bone" is SUPER RECOMMENDED.

LP - Feeling Of Love - Reward Your Grace (Import - includes download) - $18.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

We've been following The Feeling Of Love since their early singles and along the way they have warped and mutated into many a strange attractor with installments of noisy Pussy Galore worship garage blasts, free-for-all napalm noise assaults, synthy blurred pop pieces and jangling indie chortle that is down right infectious.  And on "Reward Your Grace" they've honed in on their most accessible outing yet.  They've combined their slanted Syd Barrett psychedelia with the noise pop sensibilities of the Jesus And Mary Chain, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees and The Velvet Underground to create some of the finest freak-pop tunes we've heard in quite some time.  Each track pulls you further into their unique realm of their shoegazy world of sublime strums and layered subtleties.

"Reward Your Grace" is their most cohesive album to date, an album that is perfectly paced as every new song digs deeper into your earholes with penetrating pleasure oozing out sonic candies to be gobbled up.  Grab this platter and play it for all your friends, hell, play it for your enemies and make some new friends!  Do not pass this one up.  Fiendishly Recommended.

LP - Catholic Spray - Earth Slime (Import) - $18.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Parisian psych garage manglers Catholic Spray are set to triumphantly reinvade American with their second long player, "Earth Slime" out on Born Bad Records, so watch out!!!

Some of the freshest / weirdest rock sounds are exploding outta France right now and Catholic Spray is one of the more experiemental and OUT THERE bands of them to keep yer eyes on.  Kinda like a more drugged up Cheveu, or a more punk version of Le Chomage, but definitely cruising down the same trash strewn lysergic dark alleys as Feeling Of Love, Magnetix and JC Satan.  Anyone smitten with the gluewave sounds of the French underground rock scene like us needs "Earth Slime" for sure.

Anything this deranged, scuzzy, off kilter and totally balls out will always catch our attention, especially since Catholic Spray's weirdo psych meets outsider punk is the kind of collision we usually only dream about.   So yeah "Earth Slime" is never gonna be far from our turntable.

TRES BIEN ET TRES RECOMMENDED !!!!

LP - Sickness Of Snakes - Nightmare Culture - $18.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
One-sided 12" EP version.

Thanks to the lovely folks at Soleilmoon Recordings the world is privy once again to one of the lost gems of the early 80's.

This was originally a split release with Current 93, but now it has been reissued as one sided 12" of just the Sickness of Snakes tracks.  These 3 tracks will haunt your brain and send chills up your spine.  Utilizing one of the earliest samplers, the Fairlight CMI synthesizer (championed by both Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush), Non's Boyd Rice teamed up with Coil and created 3 terrifying tracks of sinister darkness.  Thee aforementioned Kate Bush had been the last person to use the rented Fairlight and as luck would have it she left all her samples in it!  So the Sickness of Snakes sessions began by making the obvious move and just using her leftover samples.  How's that for reappropriation?  Anywho… these tracks contain loops of explosions, shattering glass, pig squeals and a whole ton of weirdo uneasiness.

If you're a fan of early Industrial and proto-goth outsider paganistic dark sonics in the vein of Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle and Coil then grab this single sided platter of hellscapes now.  Supremely Recommended

LP - Prurient - Through The Window (Import) - $20.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Break out your pentagrams and candles, shit's about to get wicked! Dominick Fernow of Cold Cave and label boss at Hospital Productions strikes again with a repress of his chilly and stunning Through The Window.

Heavy, heavy stuff! Tons of sparse and deep arrangements with hoarse, whispered vocals over them. If you dig anything Fernow's band Cold Cave has done or stuff from his label like Silent Servant or Vatican Shadow, you'll eat this up. Relentless and aggressive, Prurient has been making quite a splash recently and for good reason. Check this record out and see him live if you have the chance. Recommended!!

2xLP - Hawkwind - Leave No Star Unturned (180gm - Import) - $34.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

You all know we're major Hawkwind heads round here so it is with great pleasure we usher you into this AMAZING "lost" tape of thee one and only Hawkwind doin' what they do best… that is rockin' shit into the outer reaches of the galaxy in the live setting.

"Leave No Star Unturned" features the classic Hawkwind line-up and finds the band firing on all cylinders.  1972 finds the group mining their first 3 albums for material and stone classics like "You Shouldn't Do That", "Master Of The Universe" and "Silver Machine" all make appearances here as well many other star charted rippers show up to spread across 4 sides of wax and rounding things out is side long closer "Born To Go" which is stretched out to a psychedelic masterwork of acid drenched heavy rock that'll alter your consciousness and transcend reality.  Live Hawkwind recordings of various dubious sources have been finding their way on to compact disc for eons but this is straight up legit licensed material pressed up on the preferred vinyl format so gobble this one up pronto!  Flying is trying is dying!!! Mega Recommended.

LP - Pinnacle - Assasin - Import - $22.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
ORIGINALS HAVE FETCHED OVER $330!

AMAZING and hard-rockin' private press rarity from the seventies British underground! Pinnacle released this lone record back in '74 and the OG fetches a princely sum! Luckily Sleuth Records has taken the collector's shackles off and made this one available for a fraction of the price!!!

Palatable whiffs of Groundhogs and Hawkwind mucking about, with a lil' bit (juuuust a skosh) of prog-rock too. These guys are also balls-deep in the proto-metal, hard-rock rumblings of the early British underground a'la Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and early Judas Priest, but vocalist "Owen"s near-non-lexical, full-throated, operatic howl has us reaching for our Flower Travellin' Band or Blues Creation records! The guitars rip open the sky, and are backed up by some severe strafing from Organ/Moog player "Dave" who lends the band it's Hawkwind-ian elements, hot-boxing organ licks and laying down some serious analog atmospherics!

A KILLER release that's only growing in awesomeness every time we're spinning it! RECOMMENDED!

LP - Rich Ristagno - What Would It Be Like To Be Rich - $18.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Drag City has a knack for unearthing forgotten gems that are juuuuuuust off the beaten path from your normal reissue - such is the case with this private press oddball album from Detroit funk outsider Rich Ristagno, entitled "What Would It Be Like To Be Rich". What indeed?

We're ecstatic that this lost era of American music is coming back into focus - like any genre of music there were always fringe artists who were influenced by the heavies - Rich Ristagno clearly loves his space funk - Funkadelic seems to be the touchstone here (whether Ristagno realizes it or not) and despite his citing of Fleetwood Mac, Beatles and Aerosmith as influences, we hear the cocaine-fueled party platter of Prince and Ohio Players or the discordant space funk of Wicked Witch or Afrika Bambaata stomping around in their silver-lamé Moon Boots! Don't expect Bootsy to come cooing from the speakers however, Ristagno's manic delivery places the album somewhere closer to the Sound Cermony or Bob Chance school of musical greatness and his garage rock roots belie an end result that comes much closer to punk (or "post-punk") than he probably realized.  Cheers to Drag City for popping this one onto the dance floor!

If you dug the 'Personal Space' compilation from Numero last year then this one should get your knickers twisting! RECOMMENDED.

LP - George Brigman - Jungle Rot - $16.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

YEEESSS!!!  The Obscure Oxide label has gone and reissued this legendary album of punk blues.
We've long hailed "Microminiature Love" by Michael Yonkers as one of Permanent's all time faves and if you dig that one then this will be right up your alley.  Fans of the Bonehead Crunchers comps take note as well, George Brigman's unsung outsider masterpiece is one for the ages.  Gobs and gobs of fuzzed out distorto blues that just bleed with honesty and hard earned authenticity is what Brigman is bringing and his blistering psychedelic punk is as pure as it gets.  You can hear the long hair and feel the dirt under the fingernails as blazing guitar clatter spikes your eardrum like a prison shank hell bent on revenge and escape.  If you dig blown out bizarro gutter jams with layer upon layer of fuzz and a frenzied voice baring his soul then cop this Baltimore born rip-roaring classic now.  Absolutely Essential and Supremely Recommended.

LP - Las Antorchas - Las Antorchas - $16.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

KILLER sounding and amazing looking reissue of this Mexican psych/beat band's lone album from the mid-Sixties, reissued here by modern-day Mexican label VAM Records!!!!

Las Antorchas translates to 'The Torches' and it's an apt name as these fellas are ON FIRE - a killer record that's grounded in the Beat tradition of R&B based tunes, but Las Antorchas have their eyes on the prize and their feet on some gnarly fuzz pedals! This s/t affair has a few covers smattered amongst the tracks, but their versions of tunes by The Yardbirds, Sam Cooke and The Who are injected with some venom and exuberance! The real stars here are the original tunes - "Dime" in particular.  You can tell these dudes were already reaching FAR beyond what was expected of them as a band that played "popular music". Ebbs of what would become known as "progressive" rock start to creep in, but progressive in the way many of the mod and psych bands of the late-Sixties would start to stretch beyond the parameters of the 2.5 minute tune. GREAT reissue and an amazing insight into what was happening in Mexico during the Sixties! (Sounds like) Remastered audio and includes an 11x11 insert and a "mini poster" (just an 10 x 10 glossy card pic of the band's first single). RECOMMENDED!!!

record image
LP - Antorcha - Antorcha - $16.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

When Las Antorchas disbanded in the late-Sixties,  two of the members split off and formed Anthorcha ("Torch") who cut a few singles and EPs in the late-Sixties and early-Seventies, handily compiled here by VAM Records from Mexico onto one LP for your listening pleasure and convenience!

Antorcha took the groundwork laid by Los Antorchas and adopted a more political stance lyrically and soaked the tunes in a harder, acid rock mode - we're talkin' Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, etc! The grooves groove harder and the solos fly higher than previous works - these guys must have blown the doors off the clubs and the heads off the teens they played for! This LP compiles tunes from their EPs and singles as well as a few tracks from their self-released cassette and includes a KILLLLLLER poster of the band playing live on what seems to be a television program looking fairly... sinister.  We can DIG IT. Fans of later-era Os Mutantes and Los Dug Dugs will groove HARD on this one - RECOMMENDED.

LP - Xander Harris - New Dark Age Of Love - $13.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Freaky beats outta Austin, Tejas from Xander Harris via our buds at Not Not Fun Records!!!

Lo-fi techno? Goth house? Whatever Xander Harris is sellin', we are buyin'! New Dark Age of Love is an almost tender ode to the club kids who, let's be frank, aren't the most romantic group in the world despite the massive amounts of MDMA they may or may not ingest. However, let it not be confused, this record is twisted and we mean that with total respect and admiration. If you know us at all you understand we gravitate heavily towards the wicked, fucked up and demented sounds the 21st century can bestow upon us. And as always Not Not Fun has provided exactly what we need with this record. For fans of other label mates such as Ital, Magic Touch, Umberto or even some of the darkness coming from the likes of Silent Servant or Raime. Grab it and get bizarre!

7in - Urinals - Urinals  - $9.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

As the needle hits the wax, Urinals were a band that was somehow able to reproduce their primitive energy through their recordings. With scant knowledge of their instruments, Los Angele’s Urinals were able to get an amazing amount of mileage out of a few rudimentary notes and chords to make up these classic tracks in their all too short recording career. Somehow repetitive yet brief, simple yet intellectual, the Urinals’ minimalist deconstructions of guitar/bass/drum tropes can be heard by both their contemporaries and by ensuing generations.

The debut 7" is an amazing document of raw unadulterated creativity. This is an absolutely necessary piece of wax. Don't snooze on this release. R-E-C-O-M-M-E-N-E-D-!-!-!-!

For those of you who couldn't get enough of FUZZ's debut 2-songer on Trouble In Mind this past January, GET READY! FUZZ is back with another two-song blast of hot air for your face, this time courtesy of In The Red Records!!!!

"Sleigh Ride" dials down the Sabbath brooding thru the debut single and amps up the Blue Cheer or Morgen, with a lumbering and - yes - FUNKY bass line that gives Charlie room to shreddingly pontificate on top. "You Won't See Me" kicks of with a killer break-beat before lurching into an Iommi-worthy guitar slaughterhouse! This has us aching, yes ACHING for the debut lp - CANNOT WAIT. These guys have definitely set sail on some Dazzle Ships, that's for sure! "Cinderella Sizzle" grooves on some sunglasses-wearing cool a'la Jesus and Mary Chain cum Flaming Lips weird pop swagger, while the flip "Demon U-Wave" swims in a sea of cool synth-pop equally inspired by Soft Cell as well as later OMD or Human League! 7in - Paint Fumes - Sally Smoke Dope - $5.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Maybe the cover says it all, Paint Fumes are some of the hardest partying, most ferocious garage punkers around these days.  Not content to lay low after last year's Uck Life, these North Carolina rabble rousers are back with a three-chord three song wallop entitled Sally Smoke Dope on Slovenly Records of course!!!!

We can't believe these were the songs left off "Uck Life," cuz any garage mayhem this lo-fi, high octane and in yer face deserves to be played over and over again and LOUD.   Like the drunk cousins of Crypt and Rip Off Records, Paint Fumes are filling the hole in our hearts left wide open when Supercharger and Beguiled disappeared for good.   For sure a solid addition to yer collection if you're a Hozac, In The Red and/or Goner Records junkie like us here at the shop.   Make sure you grab a fifth along with this 45.  SUPREMELY RECOMMENDED!

The Hussy's psyched out garage punk thump is like a good drinking friend, always there when you need someone to go out on the town with, even when you shouldn't.  Sure we see Certified PR's comparisons to yer Nobunny and Redd Crosses but we raise you the Spaceshits and the Gories, but with way more weed smoke wafting through the air--in other words this is some unhinged brash rock n roll shit.   The Hussy slay us every time with their amped-up blown out budget psych rock fun, and this single is no exception.
