USED PICKS OF THE WEEK

LP - Robbie Basho - The Falconer's Arm II

Lance - Permanent Records Los Angeles

$99.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"This 1968 album, a monumental piece of folk guitar invention from the pioneering American six-string master, fuses the drones of Indian raga to flamenco and traditional folk in a similar fashion to his peers John Fahey and Sandy Bull. Robbie Basho had a profound influence on a younger generation of acoustic folk guitarists such as Leo Kottke and Stefan Grossman, who adapted many of his techniques into their repertoires. The Falconer's Arm, Vol. 2 is the second in a thematic series of works the guitarist recorded in the '60s for Takoma. His later work went further into new age territories and mysticism, yet his '60s recordings remain as essential to the anthology of American folk music as the work of John Fahey, with whom he shared more than a few traits in his six- and 12-string improvisations." - Allmusic.com

LP - The Mummies - Play Their Own Records

Liz - Permanent Records Los Angeles

$29.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"It makes perfect sense that the first LP release from garage punk revivalists/satirists the Mummies (and LP is the proper term as the band has never released anything in CD format) is a collection of previous singles. For the Mummies specialize in, among other things, repackaging pre-packaged material from rock's past and pointing out the absurdity of the Play the Hits collections from singles rock's past. Play Their Own Records is a perfect primer for the mania that was the Mummies, collecting as it does, all of the material from the Mummies' early singles (released on a handful of indie labels). These four San Francisco punks had the sense of humor and the audacity to perform out-of-control versions of ‘60s frat punk classics (along with their own wild, wooly, and socially retarded originals such as "Die," "[Doin' The] Kirk" and a handful of others here) wrapped up in stinking, dirty bandages. But the Mummies were also the next logical progression in the '60s punk lineage, following in the footprints of such Northwest rockers as the Wailers and the Sonics (the band to whom the Mummies owe the greatest debt of influence). But the songs here are also a piss-take on the retro-revivalists who put more fashion than passion into their rock & roll. Lo-fi and proud, the Mummies' takes on such Wailers hits as "Tall Cool One," "Out of Our Tree," and "Mashi" highlight and update the manic originals for a post-punk audience. Not that they were consciously thinking of that. the Mummies flaunted the concept of "budget rock" and flew the middle finger both musically and as a pose. Play Their Own Records is potent, feral punk rock and it doesn't come any more raw, propulsive, or infectious than the sounds the Mummies collected here." - Allmusic.com

LP - Sonic Youth - Confusion Is Sex (Test Pressing)

Emily - Permanent Records Los Angeles

$149.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"Abrasive and archaic, theatrical and confrontational, Confusion Is Sex marks the opening strides that Sonic Youth made during their long slog through the American underground scene of the '80s. And yes, this album is underground if anything; it's lo-fi to the point of tonal drabness, as the instruments seem to ring out in only one tone, that of screechy noise. Yet that tone in itself is part of the album's style, which is one of antithesis. The album isn't comprised of songs but rather soundscapes, while the instruments are your traditional guitar-bass-drums-vocals lineup but are performed most untraditionally. Taken as a whole, Confusion Is Sex is a spellbinding listen, especially the first time through. If you're a bona fide Sonic Youth fan, chances are you'll find it especially spellbinding -- the more of the band's albums you've heard, the better. However, if you're unfamiliar with the band, or a casual fan at most, chances are you're going to be thoroughly tested: this is not an easy album to enjoy. As inaccessible as it may be, however, Confusion Is Sex is a cornerstone of Sonic Youth's career, their true opening salvo toward underground heroism, though miles and miles away from such highly regarded albums as Daydream Nation (1988) or Dirty (1992)." - Allmusic.com

LP - Chocolate Watch Band - The Inner Mystique

Dave - Permanent Records Chicago

$499.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

Still in shrink but open
"Released in early ’68, the conundrum of The Inner Mystique is that not only was the band lineup at the time of the album’s release almost totally different than the band that recorded the psyche-rippers on the second side, but more stunningly, the music on the first side of the album was mostly recorded by studio musicians Cobb’d together [sic] that were never in Chocolate Watch Band. Far from a detriment, its schizophrenic dual personality makes the album more interesting in my mind.

Let’s take it one side at a time. The Inner Mystique kicks off with the psychedelic raga “Voyage of the Trieste”. Drenched in sitars, chimes, meandering flute, and jazz sax breaks, the cut is propelled by a repetitive fuzzy power-chord pulsing ‘m-e-l-l-o-w’. This cut is followed a soft sitar-psyche rendition of “In the Past” featuring Don Bennett singing. This shimmering and echoey number is impressive considering its strictly studio creature origins. The first side closes with the title track, another sitar ballad that is essentially a reprise of “Voyage of the Trieste”, albeit slower and darker in tone. Altogether this side of the album is a pleasant slice of gentle psychedelia, enjoyable, but without the power of the second side to rescue it from the otherwise probable obscurity that would be its fate.

Which brings us to the actual Chocolate Watch Band on the second side. Five songs, covers done better than the originals all, composed of out-takes from their first album No Way Out and a remixed and redubbed version of Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” from CWB’s first single released in ’66. The first cut is a burning cover of “I’m Not Like Everybody Else” by the Kinks. Aguilar’s vocals simmer, coming to a rolling boil as he barks out the chorus in a punk brogue Ray Davies couldn’t have achieved. Bashing caveman drums and Fender Twins in overdrive, this is garage primitive at its best. It was at this point Cobb committed a cardinal sin – he removed the original and far superior vocals of Aguilar on the next two tracks, “Medication” and “Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go” and dubbed in Bennett’s vocals which range from unexceptional on the former to painful on the latter. Despite the mediocre vocals, these tracks still cook. The Dylan cover is excellent although the original 45 version is better as the album cut suffers from Cobb’s affinity for superfluous meandering flute overdubs. The album closes out with the wailing “I Ain’t No Miracle Worker”; Aguilar positively howls. Jangly guitars and some overdubbed bouzouki round out this killer cut.

Confrontational garage-punk on stage or soft studio psychedelia, whatever it was the Chocolate Watch Band had moved on just as Ed Cobb moved on to producing other bands like Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, and Pink Floyd. Luckily we have these scraps and oily rags from the psyche-garage to ignite but The Inner Mystique applies the balm before the burn." - Thom Klepach (http://therisingstorm.net)

LP - Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality (WLP w/Poster)

Jamie - Permanent Records Chicago

$199.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

" The shortest album of Black Sabbath's glory years, Master of Reality is also their most sonically influential work. Here Tony Iommi began to experiment with tuning his guitar down three half-steps to C#, producing a sound that was darker, deeper, and sludgier than anything they'd yet committed to record. (This trick was still being copied 25 years later by every metal band looking to push the limits of heaviness, from trendy nu-metallers to Swedish deathsters.) Much more than that, Master of Reality essentially created multiple metal subgenres all by itself, laying the sonic foundations for doom, stoner and sludge metal, all in the space of just over half an hour. Classic opener "Sweet Leaf" certainly ranks as a defining stoner metal song, making its drug references far more overt (and adoring) than the preceding album's "Fairies Wear Boots." The album's other signature song, "Children of the Grave," is driven by a galloping rhythm that would later pop up on a slew of Iron Maiden tunes, among many others. Aside from "Sweet Leaf," much of Master of Reality finds the band displaying a stronger moral sense, in part an attempt to counteract the growing perception that they were Satanists. "Children of the Grave" posits a stark choice between love and nuclear annihilation, while "After Forever" philosophizes about death and the afterlife in an openly religious (but, of course, superficially morbid) fashion that offered a blueprint for the career of Christian doom band Trouble. And although the alternately sinister and jaunty "Lord of This World" is sung from Satan's point of view, he clearly doesn't think much of his own followers (and neither, by extension, does the band). It's all handled much like a horror movie with a clear moral message, for example The Exorcist. Past those four tracks, listeners get sharply contrasting tempos in the rumbling sci-fi tale "Into the Void," which shortens the distances between the multiple sections of the band's previous epics. And there's the core of the album -- all that's left is a couple of brief instrumental interludes, plus the quiet, brooding loneliness of "Solitude," a mostly textural piece that frames Osbourne's phased vocals with acoustic guitars and flutes. But, if a core of five songs seems slight for a classic album, it's also important to note that those five songs represent a nearly bottomless bag of tricks, many of which are still being imitated and explored decades later. If Paranoid has more widely known songs, the suffocating and oppressive Master of Reality was the Sabbath record that die-hard metalheads took most closely to heart." - Allmusic.com

LP - Mark Lanegan - The Winding Sheet

Robert - Permanent Records Chicago

$74.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"Removing himself for a moment from the rowdy world of grunge, Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan put his best solo foot forward with a set of acoustic dirges. His menacing voice haunts each track as the blues come to life throughout the album. Capturing the melancholy mentality of the Pacific Northwest, his words descend like raindrops upon deep puddles of mud. The undeniable beauty of a song such as "Ugly Sunday" obviously comes from reveling in the mire, something that Lanegan has been all too familiar with as a recovering addict. He finds a kindred spirit in Kurt Cobain as the two join forces to present "Down in the Dark." And his version of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" is as charged as ever with pent-up frustration and jealousy. An emotional journey through the pains of life, The Winding Sheet is an album that accurately expresses the candid underbelly of the grunge aesthetic." - Allmusic.com

Permanent Records 48th release!

NEVER BEFORE RELEASED ARCHIVAL MATERIAL FROM CHICAGO'S ANSWER TO GERMANY'S 70s KOSMISCHE / ELECTRONIC SCENE !!!!!!!   FEATURING BIL VERMETTE!!!!

"VCSR existed between 1978 and 1984. They weren't a band or a group so much as it was a collective. They never had an official release but recorded over 60 reels of tape from which cassettes were mixed down for their own use or to give to friends.

They were to be the first record on the Waxx Traxx label with Al Jourgenson producing but that never came to be.  Tape #4 is one of these raw reels recorded in 1979 and 1980. There are overdubs but no edits or redos, it was live onto tape and then maybe a second pass to add leads, etc. Many of the reels are live onto one track only. This was done before they had a mixer.

Most of these reels are now in Washington state and some are here in Chicago and some are not accounted for.

Instruments used: Arp-2600, Korg MS-20, Rhythm Ace, Yamaha & Farfisa organs, guitar, ElectroComp synthesizers and various other keyboards and effects." - Bil Vermette

FOR FANS OF:
Klaus Schulze, Popol Vuh, Cluster, Bitchin Bajas And Kosmische Musik from the back catalogs of Ohr, Sky and Brain

LP - Matchess - Somnaphoria - Mixed Color Wax

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Whitney Johnson’s Matchess project took flight in 2013, with the super limited cassette release “Seraphastra” on Digitalis Industries, a bewitching miasma of synth & organ drones, prepared tape loops, & viola scree. Trouble In Mind re- released “Seraphastra” in 2014 on vinyl, giving it a much-needed wider release, and since then, Johnson has been working diligently, crafting her next installment in a proposed trilogy, entitled “Somnaphoria”. Johnson’s solo work has always toed the line between the corporeal vs. metaphysical - the juxtaposition of the physical interaction of viola strings & the electronic pulses of circuits & oscillators. Recorded by Johnson in her home studio & mixed by Cooper Crain (Bitchin’ Bajas/Cave), & inspired by the writings of Rimbaud, Baudelaire & Verlaine, “Somnaphoria” is a dazzling leap forward. With a cohesive vision both thematically & sonically, the album fuses elements of contemporary classical music & modern experimental electronic music with a neo-new age mysticism. Johnson isn’t the first electronic musician to find inspiration in the French poets - pioneering musician Ruth White also found Baudelaire’s “Flowers of Evil” to be a guiding force & titled her 1969 album after the writer’s collected poetry works & White’s seminal work seems to be a touchstone for “Somnaphoria”. Much like Rimbaud’s symbolist poems, the underlying themes of the album’s eleven compositions play out like the fever-dream of a sleeper refusing to wake up, drifting in & out of focus, but seeing all. Indeed Rimbaud’s quest to become a “seer” thru his poetry is analagous to Johnson’s quest for a shamanic connection to the listener through her music. Matchess continues to evolve, both recorded & in a live setting & Johnson has only begun to allow us, the listener to hear her potential. “Somnaphoria” is released on the vinyl format in an edition of 500 copies on mixed vinyl, with artwork by Chicago illustrator Carrie Vinarsky & includes a download code.

LP - Bedemon - Child Of Darkness

$19.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Reissue of the Long Lost Recordings form America's First Ever Doom Metal Band!
Relapse Records is proud to announce the official re-release of Bedemon's archival recordings, Child of Darkness. Widely considered America's first doom metal band, Bedemon formed in 1973 and consisted of original Pentagram members Randy Palmer, Geof O'Keefe, and Bobby Liebling. The group was an offshoot of Pentagram, with a darker and doomier tone. The band recorded various sessions spanning from 1973-1979 which are now being made available once again after being out-of-print for over 10 years.

Additionally, the release includes extensive liner notes from original members Mike Matthews and Geof O'Keefe and is a must for fans of Pentagram and/or traditional doom metal. Bedemon's Child of Darkness is truly a crucial glimpse into the nihilistic minds that gave birth to an entire genre! LP also includes an accompanying download card for the entire record.

"Bedemon takes all of the perfect elements of heavy music and successfully combines them into an hour-long doom metal journey with massive riffs, screaming guitar solos, headbanging rockers and perfectly-placed subtle nuances that truly brings out the evil in the music." - Iron Fist" - Relapse Records

"It’s only a cliché because it’s true, but the greatest records are timeless. Black Mountain’s self-titled debut album is just such a record, its roots leading twisting paths back into the past, while always sounding like ‘now’, like a future still to come. The work of a small collective of musicians operating from Vancouver, Canada, far from any industry buzz but firmly in the eye of their own storm of creativity, Black Mountain’s debut grew from skeletal sessions cut by Stephen McBean and Joshua Wells. Here was a new classic rock, its reference points arcane and clear, its sound fresh, unfamiliar and irresistible. Savor the compact, spacey brilliance of that cosmic, heavy and subtle debut album, remastered and expanded now with a raft of delicious bonus tracks scavenged from the Black Mountain Army archives. Black Mountain (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) is out June 23rd on Jagjaguwar."- JagJaguwar

LP - Dead Moon - In The Graveyard (Mississippi reissue)

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

ORIGINALS HAVE SOLD FOR OVER $50
Dead Moon most visibly reared their heads to the uninitiated in the 1996 documentary "Hype" as the wild-eyed, chuckling husband and wife leaning over a railing in front of what appeared to be an abandoned cabin in Nowheresville, Oregon, professing endless confusion about the grunge phenomenon if not the entire idea of an organized recording industry. And to the uninitiated, the two seemed to be from a completely different planet than the Kim Thayills and Eddie Vedders of the rest of the film. These two were not struggling with art versus commerce, no. They seemed to barely care about basic physiological needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Oh the arrogance. Well, that same strange husband and wife, Fred and Toody Cole, had a long and staunchly DIY music "career" from 1978-2006, cutting their own LPs on the same mono lathe used on The Kingsmen's version of "Louie, Louie", issuing them in irregular but small quantities on their own Tombstone label with eerily nonchalant black and white covers, and largely forgoing touring in the U.S. in favor of European appearances.  Original copies of their Tombstone releases regularly fetch well over $50, and have not been reissued in any reliable form until now, thanks to the prodigious Mississippi Records.
All of which whould be more than enough to wet your whistles, but what about the music?  Well, on "In The Graveyard," the first Dead Moon LP, originally issued in 1988, you'll hear spooky scuzzed-out janglerock approximations of Wipers, Honeymoon Killers, even traces of early Tom Petty, humming with occult vibrations and filtered through Fred Cole's unglued yelp, a distinctive rock voice with the same midrange vocal-chord blowout as Peter Aaron of Chrome Cranks. Think Roky Erickson with his adenoids removed.  The Toody Cole tracks come on just as intense, landing halfway between Kim Gordon at her most insistent and Leslie Gore's "You Don't Own Me."  And if that sounds a little serious for your tastes, dig their version of "Hey Joe", just as garagey as you please and still true to the album's "maybe something bad happened here" sonic thesis. This is a dank slab of wax to be sure, mushed into shape in a workshop way out there in the dripping wet Oregon woods by a couple of folks who couldn't care less about the critcal or commercial reception. Some people whittle to keep sane. These guys rock. C'est la vie. RECOMMENDED.

LP - Dead Moon - Unknown Passage (Mississippi reissue)

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

ORIGINALS HAVE SOLD FOR OVER $50
Fred & Toody Cole are lifers, man - the married couple have been touring the world & writing & recording music together since the Seventies & don't seem to show any signs of stopping anytime soon - the Coles started Dead Moon in '87 after their punk band, The Rats dissolved in 1984 & steamrolled ahead for 19 years without stopping. 'Unknown Passage' - the group's second album, came out in 1989 - hot on the heels of their debut the year before & continues the murky onslaught perpetrated by that LP. Despite seeming fully-formed from the first note of their first LP, 'Unknown Passage'  is where they really hit their stride & start to succinctly form what would end up becoming THE classic Dead Moon sound; Hot-shit rockers sit side-by-side with dark, mid-tempo ballads all filtered through the Coles' unrestrained writing style - a mix of hard-livin' & paranoia as well as everything musically they'd absorbed up to that point; garage-y stompers, hard rockin' barn burners, & even some classic Puget-Sound punk rock a'la The Wipers or Napalm Beach. This album contains flat-out classics like "Dead Moon Night", "Evil Eye" & quite possibly the all-time Dead Moon live staple "54/40 Or Fight", as well as the requisite cover tune exploded & rebuilt in the Cole style - this time it's a killer version of "Time Has Come Today". We can't even begin to explain what a treat it is to have these available again on wax thanks to the good folks at Mississippi Records - and remastered from the original tapes to boot! Hopefully these will stick around for a while, but we recommend gettin' a copy while the gettin's good! RECOMMENDED!

LP - Dead Moon - Strange Pray Tell - Mississippi Reissue

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

Mississippi Records is serving up a double shot of Dead Moon reissues this spring so we can all get blasted !!I   Fuck Yes !!!!  This time around, they've given 1991's "Stranded In The Mystery Zone" and 1992's "Strange Pray Tell" the full on reproduction treatment.  Sadly out-of-print for nearly twenty years, and impossible to find used (better get ready to wrestle one outta someone's hands), Mississippi Records has given us the second chance we need to grab these absolutely classic albums from one of America's most unruly and DIY punk bands.   Mississippi doesn't release modern bands too often, so you know these records are f'ing important.  Here with the facts is the Mississippi PR Dept:

"One of Dead Moon's all time classics, filled with some of their catchiest and most rousing songs. Rockers of the highest caliber such as 'Destination X,' 'Fire in the Western World,' and 'Don't Look Back' as well as perfect ballads such as 'You Can't Do That' and Out in the Blues.' An utter masterpiece of psychedelic rock straight from the heart."

We couldn't agree more--frenzied rock n roll doesn't get any better than Dead Moon on "Strange Pray Tell".  Fred Cole and Toody belt out some of the most in-yer-face psych-washed punk blues anthems you'll lay yer ears on (Fire In The Western World?, 13 Going On 21? or Don't Look Back?), and well don't forget Andrew Loomis' skeletal yet driving garage cavestomp furiously pins all the madness down.  We might describe Dead Moon as falling somewhere between Gun Club, the Cramps and the Gories, but that would be beside the point.  You just gotta hear to believe and you need to throw this one on yer turntable now.  As highly suggested as they come and an absolute fucking classic.   Don't miss out on this one again.   DEAD ON RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!

LP - Mammane Sani Et Son Orgue - La Musique Electronique Du Niger

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

BACK IN PRINT!!!! LIMITED TO 1000 COPIES -
YES! We had this KILLER album from Mammane Sani when it was originally reissued a few months back. They sold out in the blink of an eye - before we could even get them into the update! Thankfully the fine, upstanding folks at Mississippi/Sahel Sounds have deemed this one worthy of a repress - read on:

"Extremely unusual organ solo performances from Niger recorded in 1978. Never before on vinyl.  Mammane Sani's unique style sounds somewhere close to a minimalist Krautrock record or maybe an undersea adventure soundtrack for a nature documentary.  We haven't heard anything from the African continent anything like this ever.  Real pleasant avante guarde music.  Liner notes in French by Chris Kirkley.  Beautiful printed locally hand made covers in the same style as Mississippi covers of the early days.  Limited one time edition of 500.  Co-release with Sahel Sounds."

This album is one of the rare slabs that really, truly entrances from the moment you drop the needle! Sparse, hypnotic & disarmingly alien sounding grooves - it's weird to hear African melodies & rhythms played thru an electronic instrument - particularly this early in the game. Sani utilizes the cold, processed & pre-programmed drum patterns to great effect - keeping it so simple that it almost sounds like a lost Sun Ra solo album or unheard album from the Sky Records discography. Just imagine if Suicide had it's origins in Nigeria instead of New York City - YEAH. Exactly. TRULY, truly jaw-dropping stuff. This bad-boy was limited to 300 copies originally & has now been repressed (in standard, printed LP jackets) in an edition of 1000 copies. That sounds like a lot, but TRUST US - you don't wanna miss out on this one. ESSENTIAL & RECOMMENDED LISTENING. Buy before you cry!

Sticky Fingers captures the band at the absolute peak of its powers on timeless tracks such as "Brown Sugar," "Wild Horses," "Bitch," "Sister Morphine," and "Dead Flowers." The effort was was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Stargroves, Mick's country home, and Olympic Studios in London. Produced by Jimmy Miller, the set ranks #63 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list and originally came out released shortly after the Stones became exiled in the south of France.

The first sessions that led to Sticky Fingers took place as far back as December 1969, in the remote location of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Alabama. The band then reconvened, back home in the UK both at Olympic and with the Rolling Stones Mobile parked up at Jagger's Stargroves home. Soon after the album hit, Sticky Fingers became the band's sixth UK #1 LP. Its four-week reign was matched by its performance in the US, and it also raced to the top in Australia, Canada, and through much of Europe. Today, it's rightly considered a near-peerless classic." - Universal Records

LP - Roommate - Make Like

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Roommate is ostensibly a pop ensemble built around Kent Lambert's songwriting, but we use "pop" loosely here. The hooks are off kilter and many of the song have a weird, tilting and slightly disorienting feel to them. This is power pop viewed through a smoky glass reflecting a slightly alternate dimension. It resembles pop music, but it's heart shuffles and lurches instead of beating in an expected fashion." - Chicagoist" - Strange Weather

LP - Royal Jesters - English Oldies

$19.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Twenty-eight homespun stunners from the Alamo City’s scrappiest souleros. The Royal Jesters were the kings of San Antonio's cross-cultural teen scene in the 1960s, soundtracking lovelorn slow dances with their heart-sick harmonies. For the first time, English Oldies gathers the best early doo-wop, R&B, and blazing Latin rock and soul from these Tex-Mex masterminds - a simmering melting pot of diverse regional flavors, best served hot." - Numero

LP - Ryley Walker - Primrose Green

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"On first listen, it’s easy to mistake Ryley Walker’s sophomore album as the forgotten effort of a heralded ’60s British folk-jazz quartet. Opening with its earthy title track, Primrose Green whisks listeners back several decades. The Chicago songwriter wields his guitar with masterful ease. It’s more than an extension of his body — it’s an extension of his imagination. His fingerpicking style takes off on its own, ambling down a path, kicking pebbles and scuffing its heels, too busy looking up at the sky and wondering how large it really is to be concerned with where exactly it’s headed. It moves comfortably at its own pace, all the while blissfully unaware of its own complexity.

At just 25 years old, Walker is seemingly decades ahead of most of his contemporaries in both technical skill and composition. The fingerpicking on “On the Banks of the Old Kishwaukee” wanders with a tumultuous spirit. Walker is wedded to his instrument — so much so that he was once fired from a job at Jimmy John’s for practicing in their walk-in freezer. That discipline eventually brought him to lacquer his fingertips at cheap salons in pursuit of a smoother sound. Several years later, he can last through dizzying codas on “Same Minds” or cheeky Irish licks on “Griffiths Bucks Blues”.

Who knows where he learned it, but Walker is hyper-aware of his vintage folk precursors. From the Nick Drake simplicities of “Love Can Be Cruel” to the Van Morrison weight of “All Kinds of You”, he follows up his debut album (also titled All Kinds of You) by burying himself deeper in the ’60s folk of Tim Hardin and John Fahey, coupled with free jazz wanderings. It’s a history well noted and well tailored to his songs.

Much of the reason Primrose Green can stand on its hind legs is because of the ornate work of Walker’s backing band. Walker’s decision to bring jazz musicians on board came from careful observations of the folk giants before him. John Martyn had double bassist Danny Thompson; Tim Buckley had guitarist Lee Underwood. Their folk sessions saw jazz musicians wandering into the studio beside them, wringing out a final product littered with improvised licks. Similarly, Walker has guitarist Brian Sulpizio and pianist Ben Boye. Primrose Green coalesces bare pastoral swirls of upright bass and dreamlike piano with the kind of background chatter you would find at a coffee shop. Joined by cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, drummer Frank Rosaly, double bassist Anton Hatwich, and vibraphone player Jason Adasiewicz, Walker incorporates improvisational jazz without compromising the album’s folk core.

Whereas William Tyler, Steve Gunn, and Daniel Bachman create long, instrumental escapades, Ryley Walker does the same but with hearty vocals added to the mix. His voice scratches with an undercurrent of soul on “Summer Dress”, washing up against the shores of Bert Jansch. What he does differently, though, comes in his looser tone. Every rustic growl etches curlicues into the song’s core. Even the explosive electric fuzz that interrupts “Sweet Satisfaction” fits snugly thanks to his clear calls that howl over it all.

Ryley Walker, much like his contemporaries, isn’t trying to build an image. That’s how he belies his age. He’s the nondescript, shaggy-haired musician who looks like any other 20-something with an acoustic guitar in his bedroom. But when he’s got a microphone in front of his lips, he transforms into a man twice his age. Walker couldn’t care less about who’s who in a world of competing buzz and social media politics. He isn’t looking to have a billboard face that draws onlookers into his set. Walker wants to jam, and if you want to listen while he does so, that’s fine. He doesn’t care if you applaud. He doesn’t care if you even remember his name. For Walker, it’s about breathing life back into ’60s folk until it bursts with springtime charm, and Primrose Green is 2015’s ultimate encompassment of that sound." - Consequence Of Sound" - Dead Oceans

LP - Various Artists - Hasabe

Mississippi, in collaboration with Change Records continues in it's tireless quest to press all of the music from the legendary Ethiopiques CDs onto vinyl with this sweet compilation called "Hasabe"! The folks at Mississippi/Change have the lowdown:

"Absolutely killer compilation of Ethiopian R&B from the golden age of Ethiopian music.  Classic performances by Lemma Demissew, Tlahoun Gessesse, Sefu Yohannes, Bahta Gebre Heywet, Teshome Meteku, Mahmoud Ahmed & Alemeyahu Eshete.  All songs never reissued on vinyl before.  A nonstop party record that we can recommend without any reservations.  The 3rd LP in our continuing series of releases culled from the monumental Ethiopiques series."
"Party record" is definitely a great way to describe this compilation - joyous, celebratory jams recorded in a way that blurs the lines between listener & artist - you practically feel as though you are in the audience watching, & if you're toes aren't tapping by the time the opening track "Astawesaléhu" by Lémma Démissew is finished, then we've lost all hope! If you know this stuff, then we shouldn't have to convince you of it's bewitching greatness, but for the uninitiated think the looooong stretched out mid-Seventies grooves of heavies like James Brown or Féla stitched together with the yearning strains of traditional Ethiopian songcraft. These tunes are all from the "golden era" of modern Ethiopian music from 1969-74 & features more well known artists like Mahmoud Ahmed alongside others of the era like Téshomé Meteku, Bahta Gébré-Heywét, & more! KILLER compilation & not for missing! RECOMMENDED - but bring your dancin' shoes!

"A dead party mix for the lost souls of this world. Tony Boggs (aka Joshua Treble) is also known for his collaborations with Mitchell Akiyama as Letters Letters on Type Records and Desormais on Akiyama's own Intr_Version label.  Zero Likes was recorded as Tony's brother spent his last days in Hospice; sampled life support machines and nurse's whispers inter-splice hazy drones and jaded lo-fi beats.  Unfollow zooms in, giving us a dimly lit skeleton; dizzying motorik beats and paranoid textures undulate freely beneath the steady pulse. Mastering and additional production by llarks.  C40, 70 copies." - Kikimora Tapes

C50, 70 copies." - Kikimora Tapes
