LP - ONO - Diegesis (turquoise vinyl) - EDITION OF 300 - $14.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
NEW ON MONIKER RECORDS!

Chicago's legendary ONO triumphantly return with a new album entitled "Diegesis" out via Moniker Records.  This is their fourth lp overall (second of their current and fertile reincarnation) and dare we say best and most experimental yet?  So hold on to yer hats, get out yer wallets and read the glowing words from Moniker HQ below -

"Rarer than a phoenix is the band whose ‘comeback’ is more vital than its original incarnation. But ONO’s second coming has lasted longer and turned far more heads than their early-80s configuration ever did, and this harrowing LP shows a band at the height of its visionary powers. Their legendary ‘gospel-noise’ has never sounded so furiously focused, from the loping, industrial thwonk of Travis Wax Madonna to the corroded funk of Spare, reminiscent of Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad productions. P. Michael’s warped beats remain the adhesive, binding the band’s maximalist, gestural noisemaking—guttural bass, swooping guitar feedback, delirious chanting—while travis, more high-priest than frontman, dons his ritual white gown and presides over the sonic feast.
But as always with ONO, the music is scarcely half the story. ONOMATOPOEIA BEFORE MUSIC was the band’s founding principle, and this conflation of language and noise has always been deeply, if not explicitly, political; Diegesis is their most aggressive, most militant document yet, digging unflinchingly at the unhealed wounds of the Body politic. BLACKPOWER.MOVE is a growling, onomatopoetic invocation of the MOVE bombing of 1985—one of the darkest and most shameful chapters in recent American history, in which the city of Philadelphia dropped a bomb on its own people, killing eleven men, women and children and allowing the resulting fires to destroy hundreds of homes. Language fails in the face of such insane tragedy; hence the screams, the sirens, the echoes of barking dogs and machine-gun fire, a dystopic soundscape held together by P. Michael’s squawking, insistent bass riff. More punishing still is the nightmarish CQCQCQ, part of travis’ ongoing, “savagely personal” explorations (as DJPTSD) of the profound traumas he experienced as a radio operator aboard the USS America in the late 60s. The final cut, a swelling, funereal rendition of Jimi Hendrix’ Burning of the Midnight Lamp, seems to offer a glimmer of redemption, but the album’s dark clouds never quite lift; an unsettling crackle remains in the air. Unquestionably a Major Statement from these untiring Chicago giants, Diegesis is a defining record that demands and rewards in equal proportion." - Moniker Records

On "Diegesis" the noise-gospel-punk-industrial whirlwind that is ONO gets concentrated into an even more potent elixir this time around; sure to break yer mind free from its trance-like state of everyday numbness.  Here the basslines are funkier, the samples more warped, the waves of guitar distortion even fiercer, the melodies more addicting and off kilter, all the while travis leading us through a gospel chanted transformation that will for sure open yer ears to the wider possibilities of music as a political, tonal and spiritual force.  ONO's dislocated place in the Chicago punk scene always lead them to interesting places, but on "Diegesis" they march further into the unknown, taking hostage the ideas of "Love Supreme" and "There's A Riot Goin' On" through "Trout Mask Replica" and "Metal Box" and pushing those sounds to their extremes, leaving in their wake the burnt up ideas you used to have about punk and post punk.  Just imagine if Throbbing Gristle, the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, This Heat, Suicide and Pere Ubu all crossed paths in the middle of the night, exchanged instruments, band members and theories about feedback.   Seriously hypnotic, unclassifiable and mind bending, you just need to hear ONO for yerself.  AND RIGHT NOW!  The time is now for Chicago to share ONO with the world, and this is just the album that's gonna get the world hooked on their gospel noise.   SUPER RECOMMENDED!!!!!

LP - Night Terrors - Spiral Vortex (Import - 180gm color vinyl) - $19.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
ONE PER CUSTOMER

SHIT YEAH,  after reissuing their 2009 album "Back To Zero" on vinyl last year, our tight bros over at Homeless Records have unleashed a BRAND NEW Night Terrors album onto our unsuspecting turntables - "Spiral Vortex"! Buckle up and prepare to dive into the maw of the VORTEX:

"Melbourne horror synth heavyweights The Night Terrors return with their new album Spiral Vortex. Featuring the haunting theremin melodies of Miles Brown, plus an orgy of vintage electronics, Spiral Vortex sees the band build upon their post-prog roots to explore a broader universe of warped psychedelia, thunderous dreamscapes and dark cosmic dance."

Essentially the project of one Miles Brown, Night Terrors exude the creeping dread of vintage Italo horror business - we're talkin' Frizzi, Goblin, etc but laced with a modern whiff of folks like Zombi, Umberto, Espectrostatic, and the like.  NO GUITARS here folks, but the synths, bass and theremin more than make up for it, pulsing with a lyrical quality that makes this album sing like the soundtrack to a lost slasher movie - live drums too (provided by Damian Coward), that propel the whole thing forward more organically than the icy grip of a drum machine. If you're a fan of anything we've mentioned so far, don't hesitate and get this now - we've got the uber-limited splatter vinyl and they're ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEED to go quicker than the flick of the devil's tongue! RECOMMENDED!!

LP - Melodien - Participation Mystique - Edition of 300 - Import - $14.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
EDITION OF 300!!!

Another amazing Deep Distance release is upon us folks and as per usual it's a doozy!  Get the full scoop directly from the label here:

"Next up for Deep Distance following killer full lengths from Expo 70 and NWW’s Colin Potter, comes the amazing debut full length from MELODIEN. The solo project for Liverpool based moog and synth head Harry Sumnall.
Offering up a teaser to the full length on the labels’ 2013 Record Store Day “Grasshopper Mind” 10”, the full length is just stunning and more than exceeds expectations. Nine amazing tracks that veer from kosmische slow burners a la Schulze, Froese and co. via the minimal approach of Terry Riley with passing nods to Giallo Soundtracks and latter day heroes like Umberto, Bitchin’ Bajas and The Emperor Machine etc. A stunning array of styles and moods- that knit perfectly over the course of a full length….
Harry himself confesses to key influences being as much from filmic and literary backgrounds as any musical heroes; Jan Nemec and Hermann Ungar amongst them and the LP has a definite cinematic feel in parts.
Pressing of 300 on vinyl only, dressed in total killer Ivan Liechti sleeve art, this is an extraordinary record. get on it!"

The Great Pop Supplement's Deep Distance imprint has been churning out stellar release after stellar release a while now and this latest one by Melodien is another winner to add to your ever growing collection of must own kosmische/minimal synth mind blowers.  The above comparison of classic Sky/Brain Records maestros mixed with latter day Giallo enthusiasts Umberto and Bitchin' Bajas is fucking spot on to say the least, but fret not this is no yadda yadda rehash, Melodien is bringing its own brand of outerspace motorik synth tickers to the foray and we are straight up loving the shit out of it!  Only 300 of these to go around so act fast folks! Supremely Limited and Supremely Recommended.

LP - Greg Ashley - Another Generation of Slaves (Mixed vinyl - Ltd to 500) - $11.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
CD - Greg Ashley - Another Generation of Slaves - $7.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
BACK IN STOCK!!!

Trouble In Mind is back with a pair of hot new releases to warm up yer cold winter nights: the latest long player from Greg Ashley (of Gris Gris and The Mirrors) and a killer 45 from Switzerland's rising stars, Klaus Johann Grobe.   You probably already know you need them both, but go ahead and read on -

"Greg Ashley has been melting minds since he was a teenager growing up in central Texas; first in his paint-peeling garagepunk band The Strate-Coats, then in lysergic psych band The Mirrors, and finally to great acclaim in his highly influential quartet The Gris Gris. If that weren’t enough, Ashley has peppered multiple solo albums in between all of these releases tracing along a path that veers to & fro from heady psychedelic freakouts to sensitive, folky tunesmithing. “Another Generation of Slaves” is a bold step off that acid-soaked artery, the nine tunes herein are Ashley’s most directly poetic suite of songs both melodically & lyrically. “Another Generation...” FEELS different. Recorded in 2013 with a cadre of jazz musicians, the malleability of his players belies dizzying results, allowing Ashley to focus on communicating the feeling of the tunes in addition to playing them. Lyrically, Ashley has never been one to mince words, but the songs are almost joyously direct. Songs like “Brother Raymond” & “Prisoner #1131267” are character studies, while somber cuts like the folky opener “East Texas Plain” & the sultry “Patterns Of Days” are extremely insular tunes, unquestionably personal & beautifully unfolded. Ashley’s grown so comfortable in his ability to craft songs, that even the breezy “Awkward Affections”s brazenly honest lyrics don’t feels forced, but like another piece of the puzzle here. The stories fit together like Ashley’s own version of “Songs Of Love & Hate” or “Trouble Is A Lonesome Town”. A collection that doesn’t work unless the listener is fully immersed in it’s world, shackled to it’s narrative.
The first vinyl edition of 500 is pressed on randomly mixed 150-gm vinyl, includes a printed inner sleeve with lyrics & a download code. All other pressings will be on basic black."
RIYL: Kurt Vile, Lee Hazlewood, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Bill Fay, Mikal Cronin" - Trouble In Mind

Greg Ashley's been occupying our turntables for years now, and after a string of excellent psych pop albums for Birdman and Guitars & Bongos, he's finally found his home on Trouble In Mind with "Another Generation Of Slaves."  Backed by some jazz musicians with serious chops, this is Mr. Ashley's most intense and artful set of songs yet!  "Another Generation Of Slaves" is perhaps half way between the desperate folk of Townes Van Zandt and Syd Barrett's warped pop vision, with might we add some haunting orchestration worthy of Van Dyke Parks.  Yeah this is that Sunday morning hangover record you Lee Hazelwood, Fred Neil, Nilsson and Leonard Cohen junkies need and will go back to over and over again.  Powerful and soul stirring songs that could've been recorded by some lost iconic songwriter of the 70s, but instead were put to tape by one of our favorite contemporary rockers.   Another smash hit from Trouble In Mind and TOTALLY RECOMMEDED!!!!!!!

LP - Froe Char - Fossils - $13.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

The Modern Tapes and Spielzeug Muzak labels have teamed up to bring us this spell binding affair by Froe Char.  Get the full details from the labels here:

"Froe Char aka Italian/Parisian Christina Lauro is also known as 1/2 of the duo Illustration Sonore who has an amazing Lp being released by the fantastic Medical Records label.  There have been a pair of previous Froe Char releases of dark beautiful ambiance but with “Fossils” she takes the distorted haze and murk of her prior work and uses it as a texture amid percolating synths and minimalist rhythms.  “Fossils” is the sultry minimal synth record for the experimental crowd or the noisy bleak record for the coldwave kids.  I once heard someone say “you can’t dance to pain” but this record really proves otherwise."

We loved the Illustratrion Sonore on Medical Records, so we knew we had to score this Froe Char LP ASAP.  Luckily Modern Tapes is headquartered in Chicago and was more than happy to bring some by the shop.  If you like the dark minimal synth sounds of the Medical Records and Minimal Wave rosters or the blurry night moves of acts like The Knife, Stacian, Gel Set, Matchess or Linea Aspera then you should really grab yourself a copy of "Fossils" for sure.  This is pure pitchblack bliss; we're talkin' blood red candles and tear streaked cheeks.  Super Recommended.

LP - Iron Claw - Iron Claw 2xLP - $23.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen
BACK IN STOCK!!!

Our pals over at Lion Productions have made a name for themselves by reissuing the creme de la creme of underheard jams from the Sixties & Seventies ranging from the softer to the harder ends of the spectrum. First they unleashed the Jerusalem record a couple years back, now prepare thyself for Scottish dungeonmasters IRON CLAW. Heed the roar of the Lion:

"Sixteen pulverizingly heavy early masterpieces of dirty doom metal, this is a can't miss package for all fans of heavy psych, proto-metal and the early days of doom rock." - The Ripple Effect. "This Scottish band are just ridiculously heavy and I think it's a travesty that the sixteen songs they wrote around 1970/1971 never got an official release until 2009. This whole album is just breathtaking." - Terrorizer. Official heavy-duty gatefold double album of early 70s Scottish underground heavy rock from Iron Claw, a band who were stomping around the UK with the likes of Black Sabbath, Hackensack, Pink Fairies, Juicy Lucy and others, but who never released a proper album. Iron Claw started their career in 1970 as (more or less)  the world's first Black Sabbath tribute band: they incorporated the entire first Black Sabbath LP and single into their live set! And as it happens, it was Iron Claw bassist Alex Wilson who unearthed the oldest known concert recording of Black Sabbath, a 1969 gig recorded by Wilson in Dumfries, Scotland! As time progressed, Iron Claw's live sets started to include many originals, as well as covers such as 'War Pigs,' 'Fairies Wear Boots,' 'Wicked World,' 'Green Manalishi' and 'Lady Whisky.' This collection of sixteen original studio tracks documents Iron Claw's existence from 1970 thru 1974 and includes extensive liner notes, lyrics and photos inside the gatefold and on a 12" insert; also includes an 11x17 poster. For fans of Tear Gas, Leaf Hound, Jerusalem, Ancient Grease, Toad, Incredible Hog, Elias Hulk! Newly re-mastered for vinyl and sounding better than ever!!  •First ever vinyl issue, taken from the original tapes •Old-style tip-on gatefold jacket + insert + poster •Newly re-mastered for vinyl and sounding better than ever!!"

Iron Claw rages pretty hard & heavy right from the needle drop, exploding outta the speakers in a puff of green wizard's smoke. Doom & gloom are the prevailing moods from song to song, cueing heavily from the Sabbath playbook, but eschewing all those sensitive piano ballads for MORE SONGS ABOUT EVIL SHIT. Absolutely killer & essential. If you like your riffs pummeling & sinister then allow u sto introduce you to your new favorite band. This baby is pressed up on two vinyl albums in the blackest of black vinyl , housed in a sweet looking gatefold jacket & includes not only an informative insert, but also an 11x17 poster! The grip of the Iron Claw may feel rough, but it'll never sound sweeter than this. TOTALLY FUCKING RECOMMENDED.

LP - Jesus Sons - Jesus Sons - Black Vinyl - $11.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Time to hop on yer hog and hit the highway cuz Mock Records just unleashed this wind in yer hair affair by Jesus Sons and it is a cruuuuuuuiiisssserrr!  But don't just take our word for it, have a look-see what the fine minds at Impose Magazine had to say about this stellar self-titled LP here:

"LA's Jesus Sons have come to save your tattered souls. Some folks spend their lives in front of the keyboard, type writer and Moleskins trying to write the great, all-American novel, story, tale, or whatever they want it to be. In that same vein, former member of The Spyrals' Brandon Wurtz, with Shannon Dean, Bert Hoover, Chance Welton, and Erik Lake have made the all-American sound. The Sons soak their chords from the dense and uptight urban environments to the riffs that rock the rusted biblebelt interstates the tie in the Southern salutes, to tightening up each coastal sea to shining sea. With a first to Jesus Sons' self-titled, the progeny of patriarchs, patriots and outlaws curate a western sound that instills envy in the hearts of all European sons. With their self-titled available January 28 from Mock Records, get in on the inside savior scheme here.
The messianic progeny make music more like rock and roll prodigies, on the opening number, "All These Furs". The guitars are tried, tested, and aren't messing around with any sweet talk. Hitting up the honky-tonks, is the whiskey steeped "Who's Around" that makes the rounds while trying to round up a posse of a few good men, or just a few cool Sons. The sleaze and sure-fire sidewinder percussion and beer gut guitar rolls out the best transgressive romanticism, with the pick-up line invitational of, "I Wanna Be Your Man". The bar room amour turns the table with the slow country western twang and turn instrumental desolation of, "You Put a Spell On Me". Desperation and destitution never sounded so at home and comfortable, than on the soul grabbing, "Don't Wanna Die".
The home on the range away from home living keeps on keeping on with, "Ain't Talkin' Homesick". Jesus Sons take the down, out, and derelict situations and spin it around to be a debaucherous celebration of howls, hisses, and all the grimy attitudes they can muster up. "Out of Time" runs around, out of mind, out of place, hanging out anywhere they want in "the age of the young". "Melt" provides an interlude instrumental moment where percussion mimics rattlers and the other dangers that lie in wait and lurk about the prairie. Bringing down the house, "Going Down" embodies the rollicking ride down the highway to perdition, with Brandon and the gang loving every moment. Closing up their self-titled, Jesus Sons consume themselves in the cautionary delights and rewrite their own Gospels according to their own bourbon soaked doctrines."

Jesus Sons have the swagger, 'tude and strut of  "Exile On Mainstreet", the fuzzed out blues rock and harmonica know-how of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the swamp choogle of CCR, the caveman stomp of the Black Lips, the bratty snarl of the Strange Boys and the repeato-riff debauchery of the Velvet Underground.  Jesus Sons are makin' some damn fine jean jacket and shades psychedelic rock and this debut full length is start to finish hazy gaze west coast Americana bliss out.  If you're searchin' for your mainline, look no further, just like Sister Ray said… play on!  Mega Recommended.

12in - Tuxedomoon - No Tears - Reissue - $12.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Another week is upon us and like clockwork another mind melting reissue shows from the unbelievably prolific Superior Viaduct.  We'll let them set the stage behind their latest:

"Founded by Steven Brown and Blaine Reininger in San Francisco, Tuxedomoon are a futuristic alternate reality of delirium and existential dread. Aligned with fellow Bay Area experimentalists The Residents (to whose Ralph Records the group eventually signed) and Robin Crutchfield’s post-DNA project Dark Day, Tuxedomoon developed a unique combination of synthesizer and guitar that placed them at the forefront of the US post-punk movement in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Their 1978 debut EP, No Tears, was recorded with vocalist Winston Tong and sound engineer Tommy Tadlock. Replete with tense synth swells, devastating live drums and a psychotic ode to the “creatures of the night,” the title track is a crucial entry in the synth-punk canon that stacks up next to the best work by Units and The Screamers. Reininger’s electric violin congeals with electronic atmospherics to unnerving ends on the instrumental “Litebulb Overkill.” Few records do justice to the mania and paranoia of a forsaken city; none do it for San Francisco like Tuxedomoon’s No Tears."

For all the wonderful weirdness going on in the late 70's/early 80's SF underground there really was no other act quite like Tuxedomoon.  They could be manic and refined at the same time, they could casually slither out waves of ominous dread while simultaneously draw you in with an effortless charm and charismatic grooves.  "No Tears", their first EP, is body contorting array of synth punk genius that is equal parts herky jerk dance party and downright terrifying.  Just the kind of combo we live for round here.  Add one of these high quality reissues to your collection pronto cuz finding originals is nigh impossible and they regularly sell for $60 to $70 if you are lucky enough to spot one.  Super Recommended.

12in - Tuxedomoon - Scream With A View - Reissue - $12.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Scream With a View, recorded surreptitiously in The Residents’ private studio in 1979, advances brilliant melodic concepts through analog technology for a sound barely comprehensible today. On “Where Interests Lie,” punchy drum machine underlies barbed and eerie leads from guitarist Michael Belfer (The Sleepers). “(Special Treatment for the) Family Man”—a reference to Dan White’s trial for the assassination of San Francisco’s mayor George Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk in 1978—is an indignant vigil cut with a rare brand of macabre humor. Saxophone, Polymoog, violin, e-bowed guitar, and CB radio interference make Scream With a View the insidious foil to the urgent No Tears EP."

This, their second EP offers up more what Tuxedomoon excelled at, unique song structures, interesting instrumentation and a sound that is as infectious as it is paranoid. Totally Recommended.

7in - Jesus Sons - Who's Around - Flexi - $4.99 - BUYbuy - LISTEN listen

Desert hills, a vintage American flag, and an Easy Rider motorcycle helmet don the backing artwork to this clear 7” flexi disc; perfectly fitting imagery for the tune contained within the grooves pressed into this limited edition audible transparency.  “Who’s Around” is the debut release by the Jesus Sons, fronted by former Spyrals bassist Brandon Wurtz, but this is clearly a group effort going in a similar, albeit more Americana-influenced direction.  All five band members are utilized as shakers and harmonicas are incorporated into the groovy, laid back rhythm section and triple guitar attack that at once recalls the hypnotic garage-yness of “White Light / White Heat” and the drug-addled blues rock of “Exile On Main Street”.  Check yr pulse if yr toes don’t start tappin’ immediately after droppin’ the needle. Only 250 hand-numbered copies exist.
