The Luxury Products USA label has reissued this long out of print essential and we are freaking elated to finally get our grubby wittle hands wrapped around this one. Lend an ear as the Luxury Products USA folks fill you in on the full story behind one of most unsung bands:
"Germany’s self-crowned “Psycho Beat” combo, 39 Clocks were a low-lit shadow unit operating in a sparsely inhabited contrarian counter-culture all their own. Evolving from a confrontational art-punk experiment, known for playing vacuum cleaners and saws and terrifying audiences with brute volume, Christian Henjes (C.H. 39) and Jurgen Gleue (J.G. 39) put 11 tracks to tape in 1981 for what would become their debut album. Oozing out shock waves of bad acid trips, decayed guitar, and the dull stomp of a tiny beatbox, Pain It Dark is American garage and proto-punk filtered through some shadow-filled masterpiece of German expressionism.
The pair’s most obvious touchstones are Suicide’s crusted synths and the ragged stumble of Loaded-era Velvets – if fed through a particularly British lens of Swell Maps/basement-DIY whack-job-ism. Amongst the outsourcing, one can nevertheless detect a native Kraut heritage peeking through in the robotic beats and icy demeanor of “Twisted & Shouts” – as Dada and nihilistic an oldies cover as can be imagined. Following De Stijl’s Zoned retrospective and a Bureau B issue of Pain It Dark on CD, this reissue marks the first availability of 39 Clocks’ music on vinyl in over 25 years!"
Do you like, Suicide, Velvet Underground, Simply Saucer or say Wire? Well how bout all of them mashed together helmed by a sunglasses sporting duo from Germany that somehow manages to meld all these classic sounds into some mutated art damaged bliss. This another of Permanent Records staff faves and we are over the moon to have this available on vinyl again cuz it is SO SO GOOD. Trust us, you NEED this record. Absolutely Recommended.
YES! One of our favorite Purling Hiss tapes finally finds it's way onto vinyl! We snagged some copies of "Paisley Montage" from Polizze & Co. when they swung thru town back in early '12 & blasted thru our copies before we could even blink! Richie Records (who else) has cranked up the HISS - read on:
"A slight return to the red-hot, fried and twisted garage/psych/punk blasts we’ve come to expect from MIKE POLIZZE’s PURLING HISS. He’s way off the leash on this one, up Hiss creek with nobody to paddle home. Recorded in various Philadelphia-area basements and men’s rooms over the course of 2007-11, the sessions were stunted and aborted as each successive borrowed practice amp blew smoke and crapped out under the strain of Polizze’s fiery fret work. Originally a cassette-only release, but just about every tape was quickly scattered and smashed along the Schuykill Expressway after being left on the roof of the tour van. Edition of 500 copies."
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAH BUDDY. This is how we like our Hiss - lo-fi, fucked up, and WEIRD. The guitars blaze like you'd expect, but there's a real abstract, but continuous thread goin' thru this collection of recordings (despite having been recorded over a 4-year period (2007-11)). Mike is definitely gettin' cosmic on these jams - some sound like tape collage experiments overdubbed with wailing guitar, others are straight up scorched-earth jams, while others ride the weird sinewy experimentalism of someone like Snakefinger; pseudo-abstract noodling that really takes you somewhere. Kudos to Richie for rescuing this one from the side of the road - we gave this tape two BIIIIIG thumbs up when it came out originally and you can consider those thumbs still up. WAY up. RECOMMENDED, ya heshers. Cop it.
Superior Viaduct is already on our short-list for reissue label of 2013 (those Devo reissues alone - I mean, RIGHT?!?!) but the late-breaking addition of this right here - the Solaris soundtrack which makes it to the vinyl format in it's original, official version featuring composer Eduard Artemiev's original score for the film - SV's got your in-depth info right here:
"It’s only appropriate that Solaris, Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s psychological sci-fi classic from 1972, contains an equally original and mind-bending score. Solaris explores the inadequacies of time and memory on an enigmatic planet below a derelict space station. To reinforce the film’s chilling setting, Tarkovsky commissioned composer Eduard Artemiev to construct an electronic soundscape reflecting planet Solaris’ amorphous and mysterious surface; Artemiev rose to the challenge with a prophetic work that defies the era’s technological limitations while evoking unparalleled emotional responses even today. Artemiev’s score—centered around variations on Bach’s “Chorale Prelude in F-Minor,” a somber piece for solo organ—sounds majestic alongside dissonant crescendos and formless, ambient tracks. Armed with the massive ANS synthesizer (aptly named after Russian occultist Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, who pioneered thought behind the synesthesiatic effects of music), Artemiev drafted sine waves on glass plates for the machine to interpret. The only prototype of the ANS was destroyed shortly after the Solaris soundtrack was recorded. Luckily this artifact of transcendent composition married with technological innovation endures as a masterpiece of early electronic music. Superior Viaduct is honored to present the first-time official release of Artemiev’s original soundtrack for the film (not to be confused with the previously available re-recording of the music). This deluxe package comes with three unique front-cover designs and is recommended for fans of Cluster, Iannis Xenakis, and Louis and Bebe Barron’s Forbidden Planet."" - Superior Viaduct
We're not sure if you dudes remember the music from the movie Solaris, but the pieces composed by Artemiev are haunting, claustrophobic soundscapes that accurately represent the oppressive loneliness & ennui portrayed in the film to terrifying results. These pieces sound like what we'd imagine the themes to the end of the universe would sound like - space folding in on itself until nothing exists, save a single galactic tear. If you're not already depressed by how insignificant you are in the grand scope of the infinite universe, just throw this platter on & take the space shuttle to planet bummer. We're pretty stoked to hear the original recordings by Artemiev - never on wax (officially) until now! Superior Viaduct has a finger on the pulse of the collector out there too, releasing this bad boy in THREE different handmade editions - collect them all! WELL WORTH your time & money - get this now & you can thank us later. RECOMMENDED.
Originally a cassette release the Golden Lab Records folks have given this scorching album a second life on the preferred vinyl format. Get the full story direct from Golden Lab:
"Chalaque is the solo project of UK guitar player Nick Mitchell, but he regularly incorporates various supporting players. The power trio formation is in effect here on Sounds from the Other Ideology with Burnt Hills' bass player Eric Hardiman (see also Rambutan, Century Plants and the Tape Drift label) and Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides' drummer Pascal Nichols providing punk-as-fuck Motörhead-isms behind relentless psychedelic shredding and fretboard tapping. " - Golden Lab
Chalaque are bringin' beastly bass groove hypnosis, manic skittering drumming and fuzzed guitar skree that strives for the furthest reaches of sanity. Two side-loooooooonng jaaaammzzz that sound like they were recorded live at some basement hash gathering making this psychedelic platter heavy, raw and dirty just like we like it. Mega Recommended.
Hard-drivin', heavy riffin' psychedelic rock from these English lads - their only album "Orgasm" is a bit of a misnomer, as "Head Machine" was never really a real band per sé... but Aurora Records (who reissued this mutha) has the start of this funky tale right here:
"Pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Taped by psychedelic rockers the Gods (as Head Machine) at the tail-end of 1969, shortly before they morphed into Toe Fat and then Uriah Heep, this British underground rock classic features plenty of wailing guitar from Ken Hensley, and powerful drumming from Lee Kerslake. Extremely rare in its original form, it makes a welcome return to LP here, complete with background notes. "
We've said it before & we'll say it again right now; this is really a golden age of reissues - everything under the sun is getting the vinyl reissue treatment & we can personally thank Aurora for re-releasing this underheard gem on wax! Powerful riffs & soaring vocals cascade & careen over (somewhat) progressive organ swells - this project is the first glimpse of what was to come for these fellas. Abandoning the somewhat more mainstream pop/rock sound of The Gods in favour of a more progressive, harder approach (which would later creep into their next project, Toe Fat & eventually finding great success in Uriah Heep), this album is a solid companion for fans of Uriah Heep as well as Sir Lord Baltimore, Bloodrock, T2 or other bands of that ilk. The tunes are heavy, but retain a killer sense of melody & the songs have some serious hooks! We're diggin it & we recommend you experience your first "Orgasm" (by buying this album - calm down, people!) RECOMMENDED!
We are super stoked about Latino Bugger Veil's Butthole Surfers vinyl reissue campaign! Here's the low down straight from the LBV:
"Latino Bugger Veil presents the long-awaited vinyl reissues of Butthole Surfers’ first four full-length albums. The Butthole Surfers debut album "Psychic, Powerless… Another Man's Sac", released in 1984, was a twisted and debauched mutant that threw all the "rules" of punk out the window. Texas' Butthole Surfers were unlike any other band at the time, these were weeeeiiiirrrrdd punks who were out for blood. Depraved drug fueled lunacy, a barrage of strobe lights, clothes pins, strange movie projections, shotguns loaded with blanks and unabashed nudity were standard for live performances and their sound was unmatched in unhinged psychedelic coo-coo, dirty hair bad person r'n'r, head scratching tape manipulations and found sound jibber jabber. This troupe of freak flag flying goo goo mucks roamed the earth with their dog Mark Farner Of Grand Funk Railroad and brought havoc and ecstasy in equal doses to any who dared dip into their brown acid sonics. The lovely people at Riot Season have brought this classic back on vinyl and we can't thank them enough, listen up as Riot Season fills you in on absolutely essential record:
"Mellow Out is, perhaps, THE classic Japanese underground album. Since it was first released in 1996 on the now-defunct Charnel Music label, its legend has grown and grown, and is still talked about by lovers of all things loud, noisy, and Japanese as the definitive Japanese noise-rock statement. Upon release it was instantly dubbed "the pinnacle of achievement for guitar-driven, brain-crushing madness," and with good reason. Rarely has an album contained such fierce/brutal battering, and speaker-shredding, in-the-red levels. Mainliner were a Japanese trio consisting of Asahito Nanjo (High Rise), Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), and Hajime Koizumi. Originally released on CD back in '96 on Charnel, the pressing quickly disappeared and had been unavailable until Riot Season re-released it in 2003 in a limited CD and vinyl run, both of which sold out quickly. With the 2013 rebirth of Mainliner, now dubbed Kawabata Makoto's Mainliner, the time felt right for a re-release of the much sought-after vinyl. So here it is, on the back of excellent press on their Revelation Space (REPOSE 036CD/LP) comeback album. This vinyl pressing is limited to 500 copies for the world and comes in two (250 of each) translucent colored vinyl editions. The music has been remastered and the sleeve artwork has been tweaked from the original vinyl pressing, too -- now with 350gsm card sleeve with metallic silver ink print."
YUP! What they said times infinity… proceed directly to check out and grab this mother now as it belongs in all collections. This one of the quintessential Japanese Psychrawk brain scrapers and it is gonna mess up your hearing good and proper. What ? Huh? Exactly. Beyond Recommended.
Following a killer 7 inch single for Hozac, Philly's Far Out Fangtooth is dropping their sophomore album, "Borrowed Time" on Siltbreeze Records. And you know if Tom Lax put the lp out, it's worth yer attention!!!!
"Borrowed Time is Far-Out Fangtooth’s second full-length LP for Siltbreeze and follows an excellent one-off seven-inch effort for the HoZac label. In the two years since the band’s debut, Pure & Disinterested, their sound has matured; their direction, finessed. While the first LP carried heavy Sonic Youth / Christian Death vibes, Borrowed Time segues in and out of the fuzz / feedback pop of The Jesus & Mary Chain, the smoldering post-punk darkness of Sort Sol and the crashing, echo-laden psychedelia of Five Day Week Straw People. "" - Siltbreeze
YES!!!! When bands like Christian Death, Sonic Youth and JAMC are mentioned, as well as adjectives like DARK, POST PUNK, FEEDBACK and FUZZ by someone like Siltbreeze our ears perk up! "Borrowed Time" will definitely creep around yer brain for hours after the first spin, at times channeling eerie death rock, at others post industrial noisy RnR. We hear elements of Bauhaus, Pussy Galore, Live Skull and Joy Division all conjured in their voodoo swirl of influences, but sounding all uniquely their own. Fans of labels like Sacred Bones, Hozac and for sure Siltbreeze need some Far Out Fangtooth now. "Borrowed Time" is RECOMMENDED TO THE MAX!!!!!!!
Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records returns to the ring swingin' with this KILLER album from Swedish cosmic collective Our Solar System (which features Dungen bassist Mattias Gustavsson) - BBiB has fueled up the spacecraft & have prepared for launch, so strap yourselves in for the gravity-defiying sounds of Our Solar System!:
“In space, no one can hear you scream – but the space inhabited by Our Solar System (an interplanetary collective including Dungen’s Mattias Gustavsson) proves that you can be heard to sing, dance, improvise, jam and otherwise create a joyful, cosmic explosion of sound.” - Ryan Muldoon, Revolt of the Apes
Our Solar System is a large music collective, a floating crowd of people, where everyone who wants to be part of creating within these cosmic frames is welcome. Our Solar System live is an evolving collective. As long as they are ten planets, they play. Each musician represents a planet, including the asteroid belt and Pluto, and OSS dress in identical outfits adorned with planetary symbols to highlight the concept's power over the individual. This debut album was recorded live one hot summer afternoon in the amphitheater at Raven mountain in Vårberg, Sweden and one cold November night at a magical party in an old movie theater in Kärrtorp. For those who want to compare this work with other musical journeys, one can draw parallels to Alice Coltrane, Pärsson Sound, Sigur Rós, Can and early Pink Floyd. The planets involved so far also play in bands like Dungen, Life on Earth!, The Amazing, Promise And The Monster, Lisa o Piu, Me and My Kites, Siri Karlsson, AnnaMy, Vox Vulgaris and others."
OH BABY - this is our kinda record! Our Solar System are totally nailing that hippie commune 'far-fuckin'-out-man' vibe of a buncha longhairs gettin' together & makin' something happen! If you dig the interstellar sounds of folks like Sun Ra Arkestra, Bobby Beausoleil, Amon Duul, Parson Sound, Trad Gras Och Stenar, or The Ya Ho Wah/Source Family then these ten tracks aughtta have your Lucifer rising (eh? eh? badump-CHA!) with their mystical & arcane atmosphere! It's a great and easy listen too, considering the density of the tunes, but the ten tracks don't linger overly long on the jam/freakoutsand we can DEFINITELY dig an album that doesn't overstay it's welcome. A killer record - we wholeheartedly RECOMMEND it. Get this or die trying. See you on the other side...
Hot on the heels of Numero Group's amazing and (proving to be) exhaustive Unwound reissue campaign we've managed to stumble upon deadstock copies of the "Live In London" 12" EP that originally came out in 1999 on LoveLetter Records. Recorded for John Peel's radio show on 5/24/98, the EP consists of four live tracks spanning three of their seminal albums; "Side Effects Of Being Tired" from their (at the time) newly released 'Challenge For A Civilized Society', "Hexenszene" from 'New Plastic Ideas' and the live staple medley of "Kantina / Were, Are and Was or Is" from "Fake Train". The band RIPS, firing on all-cylinders here proving why they were the best band going at that time. Don't miss your chance to snag this one - RECOMMENDED!
GET READY FOR SOME DRUNKEN HAVOC, cuz Almost Ready Records just released Liquor Store's 2nd LP "In The Garden"!!!!!!
"LIQUOR STORE may very well be the only REAL rock'n'roll band in existence today, or at least the only one with enough balls and attitude to be as true to the form as they are. These guys will save America if everyone can stop posing long enough to give them a chance. Whereas Yeah Buddy was a magnum 2xLP opus, In the Garden clocks in at a concise 35 minutes with eight songs of uncut rock showing off the guitar moves they've tightened the screws on even further since last go-round. The production is fittingly big, the instrumentation full of flash and bang and polished with liberal doses of piano, harmonica, tambo, keys, snaps, claps and more that sound like a million bucks. Lyrically, these tunes have some of the finest poetry written since Andy Shernoff was still on an active roster. The triple guitar assault is devastating, recalling the majestic three gun attack of Molly Hatchet and echoing some of their fine Southern rock moves as well. ""Keys to the Face"" is the big time anthem here—as tough and tight as leather pants, a mean and mysterious rocker that drives with indelible catchiness. Guitar lines bob and weave and intertwine with each other, the type of teamwork not seen outside of organized sports. ""Big Wheels"" is a tale of takin' care of business delivered with a twangy zest and zeal that even BTO couldn't muster (probably because they were Canadian). ""Pile of Dirt"" cribs moves from the good ol Nuge himself, take-no-prisoners guitar action that hasn't been heard since ""Stranglehold"", combined with the world-beating self-loathing that powered the best of classic punk. ""Vodka Beach"" shows off their sensitive side - who needs romance, when you've got a hand? ""Titty Was Loc'd"" is some band of brothers kinda shit with the type of spirit that would make The Boss proud. And speaking of The Boss, ""Midnight Walker"" fits in somewhere between him and the Dead Boys, a modern day ""Sonic Reducer"" as envisioned from the shores of New Jersey. If anyone has any taste (or a clue) this record should be launching Liquor Store into the music stratosphere. Real rock'n'roll is a mercurial thing—don't let it slip through fingers."" - Almost Ready
Holy hell, nobody rips through a set of classic rock loving, delinquent garage punk like Liquor Store does on their new lp. Stealing the best drunken moves and fiery guitar riffs from Thin Lizzy, the Dictators, Kiss and Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, Liquor Store are set to rage all night long, as long as you keep flipping "In The Garden" over and over. Shit no band since the Dwarves or the New Bomb Turks has been this LOUD, TRASHY, MISANTHROPIC and FUCKING FUN, and that puts Liquor Store right up there with some of the best. Hey look no further than "In The Garden" you garage punkers cuz it's INSANELY RECOMMENDED and sure to cause just the kinda chaos you need when the needle hits the wax!!!!!!!!
Aussie lo-fi wunderkind duo, Super Wild Horses, return with their sophomore LP, "Crosswords" out on Dot Dash Records!!!!
"Melbourne duo Super Wild Horses stitch together an intricate patchwork of guitar, drums and keys over dual harmonies and sparse arrangements. Forming the group in 2009, Amy Franz and Hayley McKee have carved a name for themselves locally and internationally as leaders among the lo-fi garage / DIY scene currently exploding out of Australia. In support of their critically lauded debut LP, Fifteen, the pair toured the USA, including a slot at the venerable Goner Fest in Memphis; back home, their on-stage energy put them on festival stages including Big Day Out, Golden Plains and Sydney Festival, and earned them invitations to tour with the likes of Best Coast, Foo Fighters, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Drones, Thee Oh Sees, Pond, Dum Dum Girls and Ty Segall.
Following the 2010 release of Fifteen, the two-piece took some time to experiment with compositions and textures, adding layers to the more immediate garage sound of their debut. “This time around it was really important to us to allow space for us both to push our song ideas,” says the band. “Rather than just finish a song and whack it straight on the record, we worked more on the structure of each song until we were confident it was in the best shape it could be.” In 2012, Super Wild Horses bunkered down with producer Mikey Young (of Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control) and engineer Jack Farley (Twerps, Beaches, St Helens) to complete work on their sophomore album. Crosswords is a reflection on the guessing game of life: the times one gets it right and the times when one is left staring at the aftermath of a bad decision. The duo explores a wider range of influences—soul, country, pop and, at times, even more melancholic tones—alongside their unique brand of garage-driven goodness. " - Dot Dash
Although three years is quite a lot of time to wait for a follow up to 2010's excellent lp "Fifteen," we must say the wait was well fucking worth it. There's something mesmerizing about Super Wild Horses trebly pop that just sticks with you way longer than the mass of bands toting around the "lo-fi" tag. Maybe it's their love of 80s UK DIY rock and kiwi pop? Or maybe it's their urgency and their syrupy sweet jangly melodies that bounce around over the feedback laced production? But either way "Crosswords" is sure to put them back at the top of our list of fave Aussie bands, and makes us wanna spin both their lps back to back constantly. And you will too if yer a fan of Boomgates, Twerps, Eddy Current, Woolen Men, Vivian Girls and other like minded bands. SUPER RECOMMENDED, but you probably already knew that!!!!
Desert hills, a vintage American flag, and an Easy Rider motorcycle helmet don the backing artwork to this clear 7” flexi disc; perfectly fitting imagery for the tune contained within the grooves pressed into this limited edition audible transparency. “Who’s Around” is the debut release by the Jesus Sons, fronted by former Spyrals bassist Brandon Wurtz, but this is clearly a group effort going in a similar, albeit more Americana-influenced direction. All five band members are utilized as shakers and harmonicas are incorporated into the groovy, laid back rhythm section and triple guitar attack that at once recalls the hypnotic garage-yness of “White Light / White Heat” and the drug-addled blues rock of “Exile On Main Street”. Check yr pulse if yr toes don’t start tappin’ immediately after droppin’ the needle. Only 250 hand-numbered copies exist.
We were pretty stoked on the Chad and the Meatbodies side of the recent split they did with our main man, Ty Segall, so you can imagine our excitement upon seeing this new C&tMB tape hit our decks - and on Ty's new label God? Records, no less! Those paying attention might recognize Chad Ubovich from his stints as sideman in not only Mikal Cronin's live band, but also Ty's own heavy rock trio Fuzz - Chad's a helluva player and his shreddability is on ultimate display here! Musically, the tunes here are definitely in the same wheelhouse as Cronin and Segall - grungy, sunbaked garage-rock jams that are heavy on the fuzz, and ride high on sweet harmonies and righteous hooks. Ubovich's not afraid to get weird too - the last track, "Heliocentrism" is a mindbending tape-collage experiment that really foreshadows what may lie ahead for Chad & The Meatbodies! We can dig it! Not sure on the pressing size, but it can't be too many, so do your tape deck a favor and scoop this one up ASAP! RECOMMENDED.
Tape - Hatchet - Hatchet - $4.99 - BUY
San Francisco's Hatchet (how is that not a movie title?!?!) seem steeped in mystery. The fact that there's another band called Hatchet also from SF (sheesh) only further adds to this mystique. But leave it to our buddy Ty Segall who released this tape on his own God? Tapes to usher in this gang of head bangers to bring pleasing sounds to your ear holes. We're hearing some seriously crusty sounds in the vein of Venom and Amebix. This tape is a true marriage of the Bay Area heavy metal tradition and New Wave Of British Heavy Metal vibe and we like it mightily! But if our word is not enough here's what fellow San Franciscians Rank/Xerox had to say about this tape:
"This group of stoned freaks called Hatchet put out a tape on God? Tapes and it’s the best thing I’ve heard from SF this year. Not the thrash metal Hatchet mind you, who are also from SF." Kevin of Rank/Xerox
