USED PICKS OF THE WEEK

LP - Silver Apples - Contact

Liz - Permanent Records Los Angeles

$99.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"Aside from Simeon's use of a banjo on a couple of tracks, the music on Contact does not differ from that of their debut. One aspect improved upon was the lyrics; many possess the same "cosmic" element found on Silver Apples, but others are full of bitterness, pain, paranoia, and confusion. In turn, the lead oscillator is used to greater effect, reflecting this newfound intensity. Simeon, who composed the text for five of Contact's ten songs (he framed one song on Silver Apples, "Dancing Gods"), was largely responsible for this change. The record opens with "You and I," one of their best numbers, in which Simeon cuts out the hippie overtones present in the first album's lyrics and gets straight to the point. The text of "I Have Known Love," written by Simeon's girlfriend Eileen Lewellen, details love's all-encompassing power. "You're Not Foolin' Me" incorporates outside sound to drive home the written word, using a continuous, ringing telephone to illustrate the obsessive nature of love. "A Pox on You" and "Gypsy Love" further exploit the feelings one experiences once love is denied and the raw emotions that surface. "Confusion" features Simeon's banjo playing prominently. The playful, tossed-off script adds to its throwaway nature, although there is a line or two alluding to their pop leanings. The album closer, "Fantasies," involves Simeon guiding drummer Danny Taylor through the song and hints at the intuitive, trusting nature of their collaboration. This often hilarious track comes as a bit of a surprise, but works along with "Confusion" as a counterbalance to the darker lyrical content on Contact." - Allmusic.com

LP - Lee Hazlewood - Trouble Is A Lonesome Town

Emily - Permanent Records Los Angeles

$49.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"Trouble Is a Lonesome Town was Lee Hazlewood's first proper solo album, following his prosperous late-'50s partnership with Duane Eddy and prior to his mentoring and making of '60s boot-walker Nancy Sinatra. Hazlewood considered it a "writer's album" from which other artists could cull songs, but Trouble is a perfectly legitimate effort in its own right and characteristically wonderful Hazlewood. The songs are succinct, country-drenched cowboy ballads given a certain undeniable authority by Hazlewood's warm, bottomless baritone, which booms out of the music like a voice amplified from the heavens. The album runs through jail songs ("Six Feet of Chain"), railroad songs ("The Railroad"), traveling songs ("Long Black Train"), and cold-hearted love songs ("Look at That Woman") peppered with outlaws, itinerants, dead-end women, card players, and beat-down heroes, too. Between the songs, Hazlewood shows his storyteller's gift by offering up bits of narration, and the album itself is a storyteller's record. Trouble is like a cross between a novel full of idiosyncratic character studies (à la Faulkner) and a John Wayne Western, with Hazlewood -- looking a lot like a dharma bum on the album cover, sitting on the railroad tracks with his guitar and a dangling cigarette -- spinning out intricate yarns about all manner of interesting souls with names like Orville Dobkins and Emory Zickfoose Brown, all residents of the hard-scrabbled fictitious town Trouble ("nothing with a railroad running through it"), which is loosely based on his birthplace. The music is as somber and loping as such subject matter demands, mostly consisting of strummed acoustic guitars and woeful harmonica wails that weep the blues. But it is in the purposefully humorous, sympathetic, and colorful storytelling that the distinct, dead-on Americana heart of Trouble lays." - Allmusic.com

LP - ESG - ESG

Lance - Permanent Records Los Angeles

$79.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"This self-titled 1991 release was beefed up with two of the three tracks from ESG’s 1981 debut (the funky post-disco classic “Moody” and the sampled-to-death “UFO”) and the two best cuts from the group’s four-track 1987 EP (the best of the pair being “Standing in Line,” spun at the Paradise Garage by legend Larry Levan). The majority of the remaining seven tracks, which clock in at just short of 30 minutes, cannot compete with those high points, though the bobbing “Erase You” boasts the same level of stinging, playful attitude as “You’re No Good,” and “I Wanna Dance” carries some surprisingly effective contrast between its liquid funk bassline and bluesy guitar flicks." - Allmusic.com

LP - Suzanne Ciani - Seven Waves

Dave - Permanent Records Chicago

$39.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"Seven Waves is Suzanne Ciani's first album. She started recording it in 1979, finished it in 1981, and released it in Japan in 1982. The first U.S. release was in 1984. She re-released it in 1995 on Seventh Wave, her own label, named for this CD. She recorded this music on vintage electronic equipment, most of which no longer exists. This set is a conglomeration of Ciani's electronic wizardry, her new age sensitivity, and her innate romanticism. The atmospheres and soundscapes are dense and gentle. Her melodies hover above and within the soundscapes. This is classic e-music and essential listening for all fans of electronic new age music. It evokes responses similar to those evoked by Kitaro, Constance Demby, Nik Tyndall, and Lisa Lynne." - Allmusic.com

LP - Groundhogs - Split

Jamie - Permanent Records Chicago

$39.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"As the Groundhogs' best example of their gritty blues-rock fire and unique form of guitar-driven music, Split reveals more about Tony McPhee's character, perseverance, and pure love for performing this style of blues than any other album. Based around the misunderstanding and mystery of schizophrenia, Split takes a raw, bottom-heavy recipe of spirited, spunky guitar riffs (some of the best that McPhee has ever played) and attaches them to some well-maintained and intelligently written songs. The first four tracks are simply titled "Part One" to "Part Four" and instantly enter Split's eccentric, almost bizarre conceptual realm, but it's with "Cherry Red" that the album's full blues flavor begins to seep through, continuing into enigmatic but equally entertaining tracks like "A Year in the Life" and the mighty finale, entitled "Groundhog." Aside from McPhee's singing, there's a noticeable amount of candor in Peter Cruickshank's baggy, unbound percussion, which comes across as aimless and beautifully messy in order to complement the blues-grunge feel of the album. Murky, fuzzy, and wisely esoteric, Split harbors quite a bit of energy across its eight tracks, taking into consideration that so much atmosphere and spaciousness is conjured up by only three main instruments. This album, along with 1972's Who Will Save the World?, are regarded as two of the strongest efforts from the Groundhogs, but Split instills a little bit more of McPhee's vocal passion and dishes out slightly stronger portions of his guitar playing to emphasize the album's theme." - Allmusic.com

LP - John Coltrane - Kulu Se Mama

Jon - Permanent Records Chicago

$14.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"Kulu Sé Mama is an album by jazz musician John Coltrane. Recorded during 1965, it was released in early 1967 as Impulse! A-9106 (AS-9106 for the stereo version). The title piece and "Selflessness" were recorded in October 1965 and feature a large ensemble including Sanders, Garrett, Butler and Lewis. The other tracks, "Vigil", "Welcome" and "Dusk Dawn", feature the "classic quartet" (Coltrane, Jones, Garrison and Tyner). "Kulu Sé Mama" was composed by Juno Lewis, whilst other titles are credited to Coltrane. "Selflessness" was first released on the posthumous album Selflessness: Featuring My Favorite Things, and "Dusk Dawn" was first released on the posthumous album Living Space. Kulu Sé Mama was the last album released during Coltrane's lifetime." - Wikipedia

LP - D.R.I. - Dealing With It

Robert - Permanent Records Chicago

$29.99 → Email If Interested LISTEN

"About two years prior to the groundbreaking release of Dealing With it, D.R.I. was known in their home turf of Texas as a hardcore, left of center, politically driven band. D.R.I. emerged from a Texan music bed often referred to as the "vat" scene (due to the lack of practice space, bands would often rehearse in empty beer vat warehouses). Verbal Abuse, Sick Pleasure, and the Dicks also rose up from the same ranks. Released just two years after Suicidal Tendencies' self-titled debut, another visceral, genre-defining debut of similar ilk, Dealing With it will forever stand as D.R.I.'s most compelling record of their often misguided career. Taking the Suicidal concept one step further, D.R.I.'s hardcore/thrash metal hybrid, Dealing With it reinvented the wheel by combining the humor and politics of Suicidal's debut with the speed and trash of Slayer's early records like Show No Mercy and the Haunting the Chapel EP. Embraced by skaters, punkers, and thrashers alike, ultra-fast songs like "Mad Man" and "Couch Slouch effortlessly alternate with the hilarious, longer, chugga-chugga rants of "Nursing Home Blues" and the monstrous "I Don't Need Society." The latter, featuring the classic rant "Your number's up/you have to go/the system says I told you so/stocked in a plane like a truckload of cattle/thousands of us sent off to die/never really knowing why" culminating with the ever reliable rant, "f**k this system, it can't have me, I don't need society." Worth having." - Allmusic.com

Permanent Records 45th release!

"Opening their album with more fuzz than an exploded dustbuster, Bloomington, Indiana's Frankie and the Witch Fingers are riding high on the hallmarks of the 2010's pantheon of garage rock heroes. Adding to the sonic soup a heavy dose of witchy vibes, psychedelic shake and an incessant grind that makes it feel vital and raw as skin peeled back, their sophomore album for Chicago's chief gutwrenchers, Permanent Records, is fueled by more than just paint by numbers rock. The band knows when to ride the tide of fuzz-addled freakout, knows when to break in the shake n' shimmy and knows just when to tear all the good times down for a good old fashioned dark horse that draws the shades and draws a little blood in the process. A solid offering from this band, reportedly uprooting from the doldrums of the Corn Belt to LA. It'll be interesting to see how the move affects their sound in the future, but for now these nuggets are more than worth the price of admission." - Raven Sings The Blues

"Frankie and the Witch Fingers are a garage rock outfit from Bloomington, Indiana (soon relocating to Los Angeles, apparently, and understandably (no shade, Hoosiers!)), and with one song, they've made their forthcoming self-titled album on Permanent a hot album to pine for in 2015. Aside from the "True Detective" vibes, I'm not sure what exactly is going on in the "sexy and dangerous witchcraft" video for "Vibrations" which is puzzling, creepy and yet, sustains fascination. Regardless, this song is at the top of the heap when it comes to garage pop tunes that could've thrived in the 1960s. You just don't hear organ work like that anymore." - Evan Minsker @ Shake Appeal - The Pitch | Pitchfork ("Vibrations" Video Premier)

Permanent Records 46th release!

"It's a month into twenty fuckin' fifteen and the best thing I've listened to so far is a band called Rectal Hygienics. I know what you're thinking, and yeah, this can go one of two ways. No, they're not a joke. Yes, this is a terrifyingly heavy album. Honestly, adjectives like heavy, violent, and brutal don't really do this record justice. I saw a blog post or forum comment somewhere where Rectal Hygienics were referred to endearingly as "pigfuck." Is that a genre? I'm not sure, but it encapsulates their sound nicely. This is a steaming pile of pigfuck. Anyway, if you dig early Swans and you're looking for a modern band with songwriting chops and an abrasive, noise-sludge aesthetic, you've found it. Ultimate Purity will be out on Permanent Records February 17th on black and cum colored vinyl (because of course)" - Ongakubaka blog

"RECTAL HYGIENICS is also a disgusting band in all the ways we like. The sludgy four-piece will terrorize your eardrums as their lead singer screams, provokes and harasses your brain with his blithering nonsense. The horrific blend of doomy, feedback-drenched hardcore may very well induce a pants-shitting, but the warm feeling it leaves in your nether regions - and your heart - are well worth the mess you're left to clean up later." - Empty Bottle

And here's what we had to say about their first LP when we first got it in at the shop:
"Hell Yeah!  Chicago's Rectal Hygienics unleash a platter of punishment in the vein of Twin Stumps, Rusted Shut and Brainbombs and you know we love us some attitude filled negative noise rock.  Rectal Hygienics are not here to play nice, as waves of feedback and flopping guttural bass riffs and pummeling drum patterns are held at bay by a barking bile filled growl spewing all things unpleasant to say the least. This is sure to piss off your neighbors as it is meant to played at the highest of volumes.  Viciously Recommended."

“In an era whose artistic expression has come to be dominated by the stultifying forces of financial and ideological conservatism, Ray Buttigieg reminds us to keep our options open. Buttigieg is a futuristic, a visionary – perhaps the leading visionary of this new breed of synthesists experimenting and exploring the rich vein of sound materials. Buttigieg is far more than a creator of intriguing music, just as he is far more than a synthesist and multi-instrumentalist. He is a poetic genius, and an articulate spokesman for a philosophy of creativity and the art of life, that although it would seem vital to the creative process is seldom encountered in either popular or “serious” art. The real rewards of Buttigieg’s influences are bound to go not to those who clone his innovations in compositional structures and sound processing, but to those who are willing to apply his insights so as to discover the sources of their own creativity – to those who are willing, as Buttigieg is, to take chances.” from “The Next Wave – The Third High,”-  Synth Magazine"

LP - Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane - Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane

REISSUED BY BYM!

$21.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"From the first listen, this album brings the revival of the neo-psychedelia from the nineties as represented by bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3, Love and Les Big Byrd, amongst others. Although this is happening in Chile 10 years later, it means that this kind of music, a song created by a simple chord in a Spanish guitar, is still important in different parts of the world, even more in Chile and the psych scene occurring in the past years (i.e Föllakzoid, La Hell Gang, The Holydrug Couple). Lo-fi recording settings, unconscious directed jams; with an acid bluesy style creates the unique sound of the record. The end result; a very coherent piece of art that pays tributes to minimal elements: sampled drums, groovie basslines, analog synths and guitar. Originally issued in 2010, TPSJ reveals a new way into the rituals of psychedelic rock, while paying tribute to American classic style, the blues, combined with a Latin vein that should be done more often. The music creates a refreshing vibe that gives hope from the underground parts of the world, unpretentious, relaxed and made with heart and soul. Be sure to check this guy out in a few years to see what he’s up to. Edition of 500 copies" - BYM

Here's what we had to say the first time we encountered this killer LP!!!!
Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane - Pay no attention to the name of this band. We wanted to hate this because of the ridiculous band name, but it's nearly unhate-able. Read this review Rich from Terminal Boredom wrote and try not to get as intrigued as we were.

"The sounds of the modern Chilean psych underground are slowly making their way to North America with some vinyl and CDRs and a word-of-mouth assist from Pink Reason's tour of the country and the reports brought back from Kevin Failure. Apparently Spacemen 3 are as big as Led Zep down there or something, which is fantastic and shows on what releases I've heard so far. The Psychedelic Schafferson Jetplane (you should just pause here for a moment to think about and enjoy this band name) are a loose experimental psychedelic jam band, including some members of the previously reviewed La Banda's and they really stretch out and relax on seven lengthy instrumental explorations. And not really jammy in the rocking sense, more like wandering about in cloudy headspaces and losing themselves in the song. You get dedications to Sandy Bull and La Banda's themselves and a couple of unexpected references to David Icke/ reptoids, all recorded live on 8-track tape without any digital tinkering. "Grio's Wisom" is exotic drone with vintage synth tone, hypnotizing percussion from bongos and lo-fi drum machine/gong and a bit of sitar-like guit noodle with the added oddity of supposedly being recorded next to a construction site with the sounds of jackhammers and other industrial machines melding into the cut seamlessly and without any manipulation if I'm deciphering the liner notes accurately. The Sandy Bull trib, "No Return Blues" has two or three guitar lines intertwining for a relaxed, yet not lazy, zone out. "Hey (Bring Us Another Drink)" has the only semblance of vocals (just a chant of "Hey." a few times) with a fantastic harmonica intro and total Sixties drop out vibing. Then we get into two reptilian/Icke jams with more harmonica, bongos, backwards Eastern-inflected guitar work for even more nod-out mushroom drones. Definite music to take drugs and stare at your lava lamp to, totally organic and heavy on the mellow and certainly a bit more interesting due to the locale the music is emanating from. A fried egg for sure, but one that's not spitting grease all over the place either."

Rich sure knows how to call 'em. There is some serious Spacemen 3 worship here and you don't even have to put the needle on the record to figure that out. The notes on the back of the jacket include "God bless Spacemen 3" and they also state that the record was recorded completely analog. They recorded next to a construction site on one jam for chrissakes.

LP - Various Artists - Angel Dust Psychedelia 1968 - 1972

HEADS UP LONGHAIRS!

$28.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

We just scored a grip of this mind-flaying import compilation of heavy-hitting, fuzzed-out guitar bangers from the "wasted generation" of 1968-1972! Compiled by the folks overseas at Frisco Speedball Records, grab your poppers & cold one & kick it with Frisco Speedball:
"Non-hippie, devastating guitar-psych and PCP induced hard-rock: Angel Dust Psychedelia is a '100% killers, no fillers' compilation featuring obscure and unknown 45s and unreleased acetates from the US, most of them released on private labels. Many local underground bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s lacked the money and/or material needed to make a full-length album, and would put out a self-released 45s instead. Record collectors and writers have been slow to understand this treasure of vintage private press singles, with music that is every bit as good as hallowed underground LPs like Mystic Siva or Boa. Fourteen tracks including the monster acid-punker 'Time Gone to Waste' by Local Traffic, post-Stereo Shoestring band Red House with an unreleased track, the mega rare acetate by Matchbox from Houston, tremendous acid-psych by Dick St John and Ragweed Patch, raw hard-rock by Masque and Zoo and more. The perfect companion to those legendary '80s psych comps like Brain Shadows, Acid Dreams, and Endless Journey. Remastered sound for a stunning in-your-face heavy guitar experience. Limited to 500 copies."
We're not gonna waste any time trying to convince you, but this comp is a hesher's dream come true! If you are AT ALL interested in the likes of the Bonehead Crunchers comps, the recent "Darkscortch Canticles" comp on Numero or your get your kicks from recent bands like Fuzz, Witchcraft, Graveyard, Zig-Zags or Kadavar then drop the spoon, man & grip this ASAP! This one's CRIMINALLY limited to 500 copies world-wide & is already getting scarce, so DON'T HESITATE! RECOMMENDED to the MAXX!

LP - Beech Creeps - Beech Creeps

$17.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"BEECH CREEPS, a rock-n-roll Chimera (the kind that breathes fire) shake us with their self-titled LP. It was recorded in Brooklyn's Secret Project Robot by JONATHAN SCHENKE   who's worked with the likes of Parquet Courts and PC Worship. The album captures the glory of the Creepsound—at times sublime, crusty, swirling and headbanging.  It's like Mötörhead kicking Superchunk's ass and Soundgarden cheering them on. Or the Melvins eating the Cure. Real rock and roll with juice and bile and sweat and heart. Features former members of PEOPLE GET READY, YEASAYER, EX MODELS, KNYFE HYTS and PTERODACTYL." - Monofonus Press

LP - Carlton Melton / Kandodo 3 - Carlton Melton / Kandodo 3

$17.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"CARLTON MELTON lead the charge with three new tracks, recorded at the Dome with BRIAN MACDOUGALL taping it down and JOHN MCBAIN mastering it for vinyl perfection. This is the Melton soaring into the stratosphere with their own toke on spaced travel via olfactory motion. Many would simply say "psych", we say "SPACE" and "NO frontiers!", fly on brothers. KANDODO 3 is the new "nom de plume" for SIMON PRICE’s (THE HEADS) Kandodo project, having roped in fellow Heads' WAYNE MASKELL (drum patterns and rhythm driving) and HUGO MORGAN (bass throb and guidance) to record under the name Kandodo 3. They take up their whole side with one looping soundscape that jitters and skitters into and around patterns of dub and space, this exhilarating take on an already pre-determined trajectory is as awesome in its scope as it is in its journey, catch a ride! Mastered by SHAWN JOSEPH (Optimum). Simon Kandodo Price artwork. 500 copies only." - Creepy Crawl

LP - Living Eyes - Living Large

AUSSIE GARAGE MUTANTS RETURN WITH THEIR SOPHOMORE LP ON AGITATED!!!!!

$17.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Geelong delinquents THE LIVING EYES will unleash a new, 10-track slab of stompers, Living Large via Agitated Records. The Living Eyes are BILLY GARDNER (who, not only runs the esteemed Geelong record label Antifade, but also plays in AUSMUTEANTS and WET BLANKETS amongst others…) on vocals and guitar, MITCH CAMPLEMAN on guitar / vocals, bassist DAYLE HERBERT and drummer NICHOLAS HILL. Their second full-length, Living Large, was recorded in a day-and-a-half by (Straight Arrows’ front man) OWEN PENGLIS in his (new) Sydney hideout, Goliath Professional Recording Studio. The tapes were then driven back down the Hume highway and finished off in a couple of West Geelong bedrooms before being sent off to Australia’s mixing master, MIKEY YOUNG. Taking their cues from the likes of The Easybeats, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Saints and The Hard Ons, The Living Eyes stand true to the vitriolic punk brash and sharp garage crunch of their self-titled debut (2013, Antifade Records) whilst crafting some DAMN SWEET power-pop hooks. The Living Eyes are Living Large with feral wallaby beat to make you pick up your feet and a shake you just can’t shake! For Fans Of: Jay Reatard, Citadel Records, The Kinks, Waterfront Records, The Ramones, In The Red Records, High Voltage AC /DC." - Agitated

LP - Prettiest Eyes - Looks

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Forming amongst the toxic sludge in Los Angeles sewers rises the city’s greatest new threat, the PRETTIEST EYES. The band crafts a completely menacing blues-based sound, attacking from all angles and firmly keeping their feet in the murky pools of psych and noise. Originally from San Juan, but now based in LA, the band operates as a three piece—PACHY takes care of the drumming and vocals. MARCO plays bass and PACO plays keyboards, and both together provide backup singing. Their album packs a psychedelic punch like the best of their California-based brethren, elevating songs from wild to straight-up berserker status. The three-pronged vocal effort calls to mind Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys or even Hungry Gayze. The end result yields a nerve-racking blend of prismatic psychedelic punk, loaded with razor-sharp elements and buzzing keyboards processed through effect pedals for an excruciating crunch.” Features AJ DAVILA and KIANI MaEDINA on the track “El Huelebicho.” - Agoo

LP - Russell St. Bombings - Russell St. Bombings

MORE GREET AUSSIE JAMS TO SINK YER EARS INTO!!!!

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"From the seemingly unending musical font of talent that is Australia comes RUSSELL ST. BOMBINGS. The band features AL MONFORT and ZEPHYR PAVEY of TOTAL CONTROL, UV RACE, EAST LINK,  DICK DIVER et al., and yet sounds nothing like any of them. How do they sound? With a name that’s been scraped from an otherwise horrible event in Melbourne, the prospective listener may have cause to expect a sonic assault characterized by aggression and cacophony. Not quite. The seven tracks here range from improv noodling recorded on an iPhone at the Museo Mural Diego Rivera to eight-minute bouts of unrelenting bliss with bits of melody here and there. Now, as you were.  Mixed and mastered by MIKEY YOUNG.

“Australian music is at a high point presently. It’s hard to keep up with all the great records coming out. The lineup of Russell St Bombings is too amazing to resist. I wonder if the members got together with as much curiosity as to what would be as I was listening to it—which I have. Over and over. Such a cool record.”—Henry Rollins " - Smary Guy
