This Week's New Featured Releases and Reissues

LP - Hawkwind - Hawkwind - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$27.99 → BUY NOW

"Produced by former Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, Hawkwind's first album was rightfully compared to Pink Floyd's early sound: an appealing conglomeration of hippie rock grooves and interplanetary guitar trips set to the phosphorescent wandering of Dik Mik's electronics and Nik Turner's cool sax playing. Hawkwind may not have been their most lucrative album, but it's where it all began. Hawkwind's initial galactic blues-rock sound is based on Dave Brock's guitar playing, rising smoke-like through the haze of lyrical space funk. The two opening tracks set the tone, with "The Reason Is" sinking in nicely to the mood of both Dave Brock's and John Harrison's guitar viscosity. After this, the real Hawkwind begins to emerge, as the eight-minute "Be Yourself" is delightfully plastered with echoed vocals and comic book ominousness, putting drummer Terry Ollis in the spotlight this time. "Seeing It as You Really Are" moves hauntingly forward through the blackness of space as a constant jam, with the keyboards, saxophone, and guitar set adrift on a nonstop instrumental voyage. What begins to materialize throughout this debut album is the band's trademarked sound as a whole, with each player making their instrument effectual and authoritative from the get-go. Hawkwind's sound indeed solidified as their career moved upward through the '70s, but their first album magnificently introduces the starting point of what was going to be a long and peculiar journey." - Allmusic.com

LP - Steve Reich - Music For 18 Musicians - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$38.99 → BUY NOW

"If Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians is simply described in terms of its materials and organization -- 11 chords followed by 11 pieces built on those chords -- then it might seem utterly dry and monotonous. The actual music, though, is far from lackluster. When this recording was released in 1978, the impact on the new music scene was immediate and overwhelming. Anyone who saw potential in minimalism and had hoped for a major breakthrough piece found it here. The beauty of its pulsing added-note harmonies and the sustained power and precision of the performance were the music's salient features; and instead of the sterile, electronic sound usually associated with minimalism, the music's warm resonance was a welcome change. Yet repeated listening brought out a subtle and important shift in Reich's conception: the patterns were no longer static repetitions moving in and out of phase with each other, but were now flexible units that grew organically and changed incrementally over the course of the work. This discovery indicated a promising new direction for Reich, one that put him ahead of his peers by giving his music greater interest and adaptability and led to the more elaborate works of the next two decades." - Allmusic.com

LP - Ride - OX4 - The Best Of Ride - Red Vinyl - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$40.99 → BUY NOW

"It wasn't exactly fashionable to be a Ride fan in the early '90s. In certain nooks of the universe, wearing a Ride T-shirt meant you had to walk with your fists clenched, ready to defend your decrepit taste in music and do the pouncing before you got pounced upon. Often, you had to endure the taunts of your peers and the remainder of those who agreed with or were influenced by the majority of the British press who decided -- shortly after praising the band for their genius -- that they were ultimately a crap band. When it came to shoegaze, they weren't My Bloody Valentine, were they? As their tastes and influences changed and they began playing more "proper" rock & roll, they failed to write anything as anthemic as "Live Forever," right? Well to hell with all of that. In the nooks of the universe where it is okay to wear a Ride shirt, Nowhere is on par with Loveless for its own peculiar rush of swirling psychedelics and more prominent vocal hooks; Going Blank Again trumps Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque because it exudes more power and focus; and 1994's Carnival of Light, with its roots in the Byrds and their ilk, is viewed more as prophecy than heresy. A copy of OX4: The Best of Ride is all you need for your defense now. Boasting a solid representation of each of Ride's albums, the band-selected compilation proves once and for all that Ride was one of the finest of the early '90s, they were capable of crafting brilliant melodies just as easily as their influences and competitors, and they never repeated themselves. So wear your Mark Gardener fringe with pride, blare "Unfamiliar" as loudly as possible, and keep Tarantula forever blocked from your memory." - Allmusic.com

LP - Swans - 12in EP - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$14.99 → BUY NOW

"Swans' first release was anything but the slow-motion death march which would rapidly become the band's early raison d'être. Gira's lyrics certainly aren't pretty; the urban angst and alienation level ratchets up high with images of dogs' hearts pumping blood on sidewalks and anonymous, violent sex, though all delivered in a slightly aggrieved and quietly mixed rather than soul-destroyed tone. However, the music also often has a quick, sharp energy to it, rather unlike the 2/2 tempos in the offing. An unavoidable influence in the crisp, echoed production and general feel is Joy Division, a debt not repaid fully until Swans' dual covers of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" in 1988. Hints of other post-punk and no wave peers creep in as well, a feeling especially created by Daniel Galli-Duani's saxophone, which generally avoids random skronk for careful shading and atmosphere. Bob Pezzola's guitar work is the standout here, though; his Bernard Sumner-ish art-metal chiming is quite good, but utterly unlike the blasts of sound Norman Westberg would soon be unleashing in his place. On balance, this is a fair release covering a sound that Swans would never again revisit. " - Allmusic.com

LP - Various Artists - Stack Waddy - Bugger Off 2 - The Strawberry Studios Outtakes - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$39.99 → BUY NOW

"LP 180 gram coloured vinyl 500 units only. Record Store Day 2015 500 LPs only world wide of this previously unreleased 1970’s material 180 gram coloured vinyl. Previously unreleased 1970s studio out take material from Manchester’s Hairy legends Stack Waddy who played punk before punk was invented but were also blues , heavy rock, progressive, psychedelic etc - just music with balls. Loved by hippies, bikers, punks, plus music biz people like Steve Albini , Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and of course John Peel. A beautiful new gatefold Stack Waddy sleeve design by legendary Liverpool sleeve and music art designer Steve Jacuzzi Hardstaff ( he designed for Led Zeppelin in the 1970s) in the style of American underground comics. Andy Gill on Stack Waddy "if you’ve a penchant for sludgy proto-heavy metal in the vein of Black Sabbath. Then this is the band" // John Peel on Stack Waddy "their attitude was apalling but wonderful at the same time, they gave me a certain amount of grief but I have to say I really liked them. Their antics make even the most outrageous punk bands that came later seem so tame. They just played the same in the studio as they did live, hard loud and alcohol infused"" - Ozit Dandelion

"First time on vinyl for legendary ‘lost’ Brian Eno album My Squelchy Life. Originally slated for release on Warner Bros in September 1991 and pulled from the schedules at the last moment, in subsequent years it has been heavily bootlegged and entered the lexicon of Eno myth. In 2014 it received an official release as the bonus disc to the expanded All Saints edition of follow-up album Nerve Net. For this exclusive Record Store Day edition it is presented in a deluxe gatefold vinyl edition, including an additional track from the same recording session, “Rapid Eye”, that has never been heard before." - Opal

LP - Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$24.99 → BUY NOW
''Nebraska'' is the sixth studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released in 1982.
Sparsely-recorded on a cassette-tape Portastudio, ''Nebraska'' was originally intended as a demonstration for later expansion into a "proper" album with a full band. However, Springsteen ultimately decided to release the demos as a standalone album. ''Nebraska'' remains one of the most highly-regarded albums in his catalog.
''Nebraska'' is classic Springsteen in the sense that the songs deal with ordinary, blue collar characters who face a challenge or a turning point in their lives. There is very little of the grace or salvation which can be seen in other albums. - Wikipedia

LP - Five Or Six - Cantame Esa Cancion Que Dice Yeah Yeah Yeah - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$25.99 → BUY NOW

"Vinilísssimo presents Cántame Esa Canción Que Dice, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah by Five or Six, one of the less heralded acts of the classic Cherry Red era. The LP contains a few cuts from their fantastic early singles and EPs, but Five or Six used this opportunity to offer mostly tracks unavailable elsewhere, all displaying the diverse and immense talent of a band that should be more well known. With echoes of Wire, This Heat, and Joy Division, this is one of the rarest and most outstanding records to come out of British post-punk. Originally released only in Spain in 1982 on the Edigsa label after a string of superb early records on Cherry Red, its limited availability elsewhere has made this LP a highly sought-after item for years." - Vinilísssimo

LP - Half Japanese - Volume Three 1990 - 1995 3xLP- RSD 2015 Exclusive

$72.99 → BUY NOW

"Formed in the mid-70s, and setting the standard for post-punk ever since, Jad and David Fair and Half Japanese return with a new volume that finds us twenty years into their story. The 90s would see them under a new spotlight as Kurt Cobain used his celebrity to tell anyone that would listen about their greatness, and had the band tour with Nirvana. They would respond with three of the most wild and varied albums in their career.  Continuing their Fire deluxe reissues of the entire Half Japanese catalogue, Volume Three: 1990-1995 is the third of four volumes containing three LPs/CDs.This next set of Half Japanese LPs begins with 1990’s explosively, noisy and chaotic (sometimes improvised) ‘We Are They Who Ache With Amorous Love’ featuring their cover of the Them garage rock classic “Gloria” and two tracks “Titanic" and "Hand Without a Body” that were co-written with the like-minded Daniel Johnston. Two years later the notably more delicate and, dare we say, jangly, ‘Fire In The Sky’ (1992) arrived at a pivotal time for the group when they gained notable recognition from the likes of Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Teenage Fanclub and Yo La Tengo (whose Ira Kaplan guests on the record). This highly anticipated third installation closes the trio with 1995’s ‘Hot’ which became MTVs album of the week on release, with Michael Goldbery writing “Hot, mixes Sonic Youth-style noise, Stooges primitivism and ’60s pop with excellent results. “Lucky Ones” is a simply charming number (“A good thing just got better/ As better as better can be”) reminiscent of Jonathan Richman, while “Drum Straight” is dose of feedback drenched skonk and “Vampire” rocks hard liken the Sonic’s “Bull In The Heather.” Fire’s colossal Half Japanese series began last year with the Record Store Day exclusive of ‘Half Gentleman/Not Beasts’, this set contains the records in their original form with extras that later appeared on CD formats available. It will also include original artwork from Jad Fair and liner notes by Half Japanese hall of famer Mark David Jickling." - Fire Records

"1200 Copies on black vinyl - No Download and no repress. In 2014 The Heads reissued their 2000 album 'Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere; in full remastered / deluxe boxet glory, and to much acclaim. In the boxset, they added a 70 minute Compact Disc of demos, unheard versions etc of material pre -2000 recorded in the rehearsal room on a walkman. For Record Store Day 2015, and to celebrate their rare live performances at Roadburn 2015,  Simon Price has taken the material he edited for the bonus CD, and added more tracks to the pot. With the mastering expertise  / tape polishing skills of Shawn Joseph, Price has created a warts'n'all  document of the time in the heads' rehearsal space just prior to the making  / construction of the Every Knows album. This double LP is 10 tracks of the Heads in their element, raw and alive in the rehearsal room prior to 2000, tracks being formed, prototype Heads' riffs in the sonic gloop. Hear this era of the Heads in its speaker blowing, walkman warping glory, a true psychedelic rock morass. Wrapped in a Simon Price sleeve, a gatefold sleeve to boot! naturally! A "fin de seicle" of sorts, 'Nobody Knows' is a closing chapter, a sonic glossary to the band's Everybody Knows' legacy. " - Rooster

LP - Various Artists - Rough Guide To Psychedelic Cambodia - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$22.99 → BUY NOW

"The Rough Guide to Psychedelic Cambodia compiles various psychedelic rock sides recorded during the '60s and '70s in Cambodia. Also included are a few cuts by contemporary Cambodian rock revivalists Dengue Fever and the Cambodian Space Project. The vintage recordings made by some of the biggest names in Cambodian pop including Ros Seresyothea, Sinn Sisamouth, Pan Ron, and others. These are electric guitar and organ-heavy songs, featuring a mix of American blues, rock, and R&B influences mixed with more traditional Cambodian styles. In that sense, many of the cuts like Yos Olarang's "Cyclo" and Ros Seresyothea's "Jam 10 Kai Theit" (Wait Ten Months More) have a lot in common with the lo-fi garage rock being made in the United States at the time. Other tracks like Ros Seresyothea's "Komlos Sey Chaom" (Love God) and "Thgnai Kor Chrer" (The Sun Is Setting) were simply inspired reworkings of Shocking Blue's "Venus" and the Animals' "House of the Rising Son," albeit sung with new Khmer lyrics (a common practice in Cambodia at the time). After the Khmer Rouge came to power, there was a cultural ban on Western-style rock music and many of the albums made during that period were destroyed and lost. Furthermore, many of the musicians who made this music were arrested and, in some cases, executed by the Khmer Rouge during the Cambodian genocide. Thankfully, a few of these recordings were preserved and collected here.  " - Allmusic.com

LP - Various Artists - Rough Guide To Psychedelic India - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$22.99 → BUY NOW

"While much has been made of Indian music's influence on Western psychedelia, it seems the reverse was also true. Paralleling George Harrison's introduction of the sitar into Western pop culture via the Beatles' Rubber Soul, a grassroots garage rock scene had begun to establish itself in India and the adventurous musical spirit that overtook late-'60s pop music was felt all over the subcontinent. This collection from the Rough Guide series spans psychedelia's influence in Indian music from the '60s onward, with classic cuts like Ananda Shankar's groovy "Dancing Drums" and the trippy Bollywood vibes of the R.D. Burman-penned "Dum Maro Dum," as well as contemporary songs like "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" by the British/Indian fusion group Sunday Driver. Perhaps a little too light on the Nuggets-style deep cuts, the Rough Guide series has always been true to its name, and this volume is a solid enough representation of an admittedly wide swath of music. LP - Various Artists - Whatever Nevermind - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$23.99 → BUY NOW

"Whatever Nevermind is a tribute album to Nirvana's 1991 second studio album, Nevermind, by various artists. The album will be released by Robotic Empire for Record Store Day on April 18, 2015 in vinyl and digital formats. Robotic Empire previously released In Utero, in Tribute, in Entirety — a tribute to Nirvana's third and final studio album In Utero — for Record Store Day 2014. Whatever Nevermind also coincides with the label's 16th anniversary, and celebrates this fact by cataloging the album as the label's 116th release.

Robotic Empire streamed Circa Survive's cover of "Drain You" along with the album's announcement on March 25, 2015.[3] Circa Survive guitarist Brendan Ekstrom commented on their cover, stating: "There are different ways to approach covering a band. For us, doing a Nirvana song takes us back to a very raw place that we were in when we were young and just falling in love with music. We didn't want to say 'here's what this song would've sounded like if Circa wrote it.' It was way more fun for us to live in their energy and pay homage to their influence by just rocking the shit out of it and keeping it raw."" - Wikipedia

A few songs quickly stretched into ten and has become the band’s best live recording yet. With last Record Store Day’s special Shepard Fairey 7”

$7.99 → BUY NOW

"D’Angelo‘s understated and deceptively poignant protest anthem “The Charade” is getting ready for the vinyl treatment, being pressed to a 7-inch single sharing wax with the album’s hard-nosed rocker “1000 Deaths” as the pressing’s b-side. Clearly, this is one of those must-cop situations, whether Black Messiah was your introduction to the great sage of soul and funk or you’re rounding out your already hefty collection of the man’s singles. Again, Record Store Day lands on April 18th of the calendar year, so get that wallet right and hit your participating local vendors for the scoop." - Okayplayer

7in - Dils - I Hate The Rich - 2015 Reissue - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$9.99 → BUY NOW

"THE DILS formed in Carlsbad, California in late 1976, although they soon relocated to San Francisco (and later Los Angeles) to become one of the preeminent bands in early West Coast punk. Their debut 45 appeared on What Records?, the same label that released THE GERMS' Forming single. While "I Hate The Rich" combines catchy melodies with a perfectly punk politique, "You're Not Blank (So Baby We're Through)" features brothers Chip and Tony Kinman's harmonizing vocals and the group's tight, breakneck rhythms.

This reissue comes with original sleeve design. Limited edition blue vinyl." - Superior Viaduct

7in - Flipper - Love Canal - 2015 Reissue - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$9.99 → BUY NOW

"FLIPPER formed in San Francisco in 1979 on the cusp of Ronald Reagan's presidency. It seems fitting that their debut single (originally released on Subterranean in 1981) turns environmental disaster into the band's modus operandi. Chorus-less and catchy-as-hell, "Love Canal" features all that would become FLIPPER trademarks in four art-damaged minutes: knuckle-dragging tempo, ear-splitting feedback, basslines to crash your car to and a depraved frontman wailing about uncomfortable American matters. "Ha Ha Ha" is even more direct in its intent, mocking suburbia with a flat, almost psychotic laugh.

This reissue comes with original sleeve design. Limited edition red vinyl." - Superior Viaduct

"At the epicenter of New York’s most significant music scene was an instantly-forgotten record label: Ork Records, the first punk label and the original “indie.” For the first time ever, the monumental output of this explosive imprint’s 1975-1979 run is all in one place. Sixteen singles that birthed punk, no-wave, power pop, and the next four decades of indie rock, including the debut releases from Television, Richard Hell, Richard Lloyd, Cheetah Chrome, Alex Chilton, the dBs, and Chris Stamey, plus future nuggets by the Revelons, Student Teachers, Prix, Marbles, Idols, Mick Farren, and Link Cromwell, and previously unreleased singles from the Feelies and Erasers. This is a limited edition of 2000 carefully replicated 7” sleeves ensconced in a custom box modeled on period-specific Ork mailing labels.

Please note: this release does not include an audio download." - Numero Group

7in - X - Adult Books - 2015 Reissue - RSD 2015 Exclusive

$9.99 → BUY NOW

"Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in LA's flourishing first wave punk scene. Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978. While these songs were later re-recorded for their second album, the versions on Adult Books / We're Desperate reveal X's raw talent for totally sincere songwriting and stripped-down rock n' roll.

This reissue comes with original sleeve design. Limited edition yellow vinyl." - Superior Viaduct
