Purling Hiss aka Mike Polizze has come a long way since 2009 and releasing his debut LP, our tenth label release on Permanent, as a Birds of Maya off-shoot project of solo recordings. Shortly following, THE HISS became a full touring band and has since released LPs on venerable labels such as Richie Records, Drag City, and Woodsist (not to mention, various cassettes).
Here are some words we penned about this LP upon it's initial release back in '09:
"Purling Hiss is one of Philly's Best! Purling Hiss is the side-project of Holy Mountain recording artists Birds of Maya guitarist Mike Polizze. Birds of Maya are a full-on psychedelic rock band from Philly.Apparently Birds just aren't full-on enough to satisfy Polizze's far-out tendencies. On his debut solo record Polizze plays bass drums and guitar relentlessly as if he's playing to save his life. This recording is so intense that the pressing plant told us they'd risk breaking their equipment if they cut the lacquers with the original master. We sent them a new master and it sounds great!"

Superior Viaduct continues on with their mind blowing reissue series with another total classic long overdue for a resurrection. We'll let label fill you on the history on this one:
"After cutting his teeth in the late ’70s no wave scene with bands Theoretical Girls and The Static, Glenn Branca made his first solo statement, Lesson No. 1, in 1980. The inaugural release on legendary post-punk / dance label 99 Records, Lesson No. 1 unveiled Branca’s visionary guitar concepts with two monstrous, side-long compositions that helped forge NYC’s downtown art-punk sound and acted as a massive influence on countless young groups, including Sonic Youth and Swans. The title track is easily Branca’s most accessible moment; its driving beat and interlocking patterns resemble German pioneers Neu! playing Phillip Glass. Never before (or since) has minimalism sounded so euphoric. “Dissonance” is the A-side’s polar opposite. Dark, skittish and unhinged, Branca leads his band (guitar, keyboard, bass, drums and sledgehammer) through block after block of industrial terror, leaving listeners drained in the process. Soon after the release of Lesson No. 1, Branca began to work on ambitious, long-form symphonies. “Bad Smells,” included here as a single-sided bonus 12-inch, was commissioned in 1982 as a dance piece for choreographer Twyler Tharp and originally released on a split LP with John Giorno. Featuring Sonic Youth guitarists Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, “Bad Smells” is a thrilling multi-section guitar assault that foretells much of Branca, Ranaldo and Moore’s work for the next decade."
Epic endless swells of searing repetition and trance inducing rhythmic ecstasy is what one will encounter when dropping the needle on Lesson No. 1 so pay close attention and you might just learn something. This beast features no less than 6 guitars, 2 basses, an organ, drums and a fucking sledgehammer. A SLEDGEHAMMER! It is a glorious moment indeed to have this thrilling platter of art damaged beauty back in print and to get a freaking bonus 12in to boot is a pretty sweet deal fer sure. Grab this one pronto and crank it all the way up, sit back and fly away! Flip it over and good luck dodging the utter terror aiming for your jugular for nearly 12 minutes straight. Super Recommended.
The Timerocker Records imprint in conjunction with Mississippi Records has brought us this must own compilation of uber obscuro oddites culled from the deepest basements and dankest garages of the 60's to create "Anxious Color". We'll let the Timerockers tell the tale:
"Amazing compilation of basement and garage dwelling stranger than fiction psych rock recorded between 1966 and 1967. The real underground sound of the 1960's as you've probably never heard it before. People making music by their own rules and influenced more by the spirit realm and the heavy weight of being alive than the pedestrian drug experiences that informed much of the 60's popular music. Featuring the legendary "Leaving My Old Life Behind" cut by Jonathan Halper (originally recorded for a Kenneth Anger film) and a bevy of bleak, blown out underground weirdness by the likes of The Royale Coachmen, The Savages, Vicki Lynn, Yesterday's Obsession, WWH, The Bohemians, Frut of The Loom, The Perils, Feebeez, Jim Olsen and Little Willie and The Wonders, "Anxious Color" plays out like some morbid soundtrack to a Jim Thompson novel. Some of the tracks seem "poppy" on the surface and you can surely cut a rug to some but delve deeper into the lyrics and truly dark and demented things begin to seep through. This collection also features an insert with some background info about each track. With track titles like Killer Of Men, Don't Break My Heart, Tell Me Why People Don't Like Me, One Hand In The Darkness, Hate, and Last Drop Of Wine clearly this ain't no "love in", this ain't no Happening! Highly Recommended.

"The son of GNP Crescendo founder, Gene Norman, Neil was given proverbial free reign over the empire that Pushin’ Too Hard built. And what’s the first thing he goes and does, but pal & partner up with Kim Fowley! Boy oh boy…kids today!
After recording his first single, Phaser Laser, an epic of damaged Alice Cooper rock/horror and suggested violence, Neil decided to give the king of Canter’s Deli a try at penning some tunes. As always, Kim wrote about what he knew. Fresh off the heels of recording as Jimmy Jukebox, Kim fired back with ‘Wild Boys’ - a fairly typical, Fowley-esque, grope-trope of perpetually erect males wreaking havoc across a vulnerable, all-female city-scape that is rocketed to the stratosphere via Neil’s fine, Punky, lead fuzz break.

"Phaser Laser" just might be that missing link between Sky Saxon's unruly band of Seeds and Alice Cooper's glammed out damage. Equal parts art bent garage and scuzzy Sunset trash rock, fans of Simply Saucer, Chocolate Watch Band, Electric Prunes and George Brigman and the like need to start getting stoked now. We didn't even know this single existed til we got our hands on some. "Phaser Laser" got comped on "Sklash- Rare Tracks From The Psychedelic Area" in the early 80s, but that is the one and only time these tracks have ever popped up. And we certainly don't know why, cuz both songs on this 45 are early LA psych / proto punk rippers!!!! And did we mention that "Wild Boys" was that song you counldn't get outta yer head from Bonehead Crunchers Vol 1? And that it was written by Kim Fowley? Yep it's that earworming sleazy track, and you probably never thought you'd be able to see it in person!!!! AND HOLY HELL it only gets better when you flip the 45 over and crank up the amphetamine sci-fi encrusted "Tits From Mars." Both tracks are trashy garage at its finest and most sick! So for you Kim Fowley garbage pop crazies, Pebbles addicts, glammed out / fuzzed up RnR lovers and fans of obscuro 60s rock in general, you need "Wild Boys" now. We just got a batch of the latest album from Brooklyn, NY's Eidetic Seeing called "Against Nature" and boy is it a doozy. 5 cuts of fuzzed out, down-tuned psychedelic space rock that bobs and weaves from slow burn head nod blues tinged doom, acid damaged stoner grooves to hyperdrive feedback drenched speedfreak powerhouses. There's touches of Earthless, Heads, White Hills, Earth and some classic Sabbath worship at play here, but Eidetic Seeing are blazing their own lysergic path of psychedelic crunch and "Against Nature" is further proof of the time put into song craft and countless hours spent experimenting with dynamics and pushing ever forward into further reaches of the cosmos. There is some serious musical chops on display here with nuanced yet frantic guitar playing, bass moves that slither while rattling yer insides and some damn fine drumming going on. This is self-released and comes with a complete download of the album as well as our heaviest Recommendations.

It is a full length tape of live cuts from 2010 featuring many of the quality jams from the "Just What Is Real" full length and even ends things off with a monster closer cover version of Skynyrd staple "Freebird"! No shit! Oh yeah and ol' Kevin Failure from Pink Reason is playing with the group on that cover tune! Bonus! Act fast friends cuz these are gonna fly outta here and are surely never to return!
